Ok rookie question. How do you get the two/multi tone finish on a project like in the attached picture. Without spending a lot of money.

paint base color.

dip end of sponge or rag in darker second color, then dab on a cloth or scrap of leather to get "most" of the dye out of the sponge

wipe the [lightly loaded] sponge down the edge.

Best to start light and build up the color... you can always add more but you can't take it back.

This effect can also be achieved relatively easily with an airbrush, spraying dye.  One of those compressed air sprayers could likely also work.

While a great airbrush setup is not cheap, a basic setup capable of the above effect can be inexpensive.

For what it's worth.  Cost around $50.  Amazon.  I posted about my mini, hand held airbrush that actually works. Bottom of page.
