Kevin King Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 rdb's "open thread" has got me motivated to start a thread i've been wanting to see for a while. I'd like to see your first......whatever. Whether its your first project period, or your first seat, wallet, saddle, purse, belt, sheath, etc. I'll start with my first wallet. I still have my first project ever (a seat) and will post a little later. So, come on, lets see em. The good, the bad, and the ugly. KK Quote
Contributing Member rdb Posted February 5, 2008 Contributing Member Report Posted February 5, 2008 okay...but i can't find my first, but i did find some early pix from way back when...1975. Considering what they were making in them days, i think I was ahead of the box by a couple days. I think that guitar strap is still around somewhere. The ship has been my mousepad all these years...it's too dark to show any image now....lol. The stitching was done on an old twin needle with one needle out. Note the old fashioned "button hole" pockets, I still love those. Quote
TracyMoss Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 (edited) Here are a few of my firsts. Edited March 2, 2008 by Johanna reduced pic size Quote

Ambassador freak Posted February 5, 2008 Ambassador Report Posted February 5, 2008 I post the first thing i ever tooled in the other thread. I think this was the second barstool i did, which was the 3rd thing i ever did. I think , or close to it and i still use it. It's where i set when i do my leather work. Quote
Members Spider Posted February 6, 2008 Members Report Posted February 6, 2008 Ok no fair. You guys have been good for a long time. lol like since you started. Hm, Lemme see if I can find something that does not embarass me too much....lol My first seat pan cover. Yes, I've been weird for a long time.... :skull3: Quote
Mike Craw Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 There is a thread in "Show Off!!" under My First Saddle where I posted this photo, but this is the first saddle I ever made. It was my daughter's wedding present in May of 2006. Quote
Members CitizenKate Posted February 6, 2008 Members Report Posted February 6, 2008 Wow, you guys have some really nice "firsts". Just goes to show how much talent we have here. I happen to have handy in my "outgoing attachments" folder a photo I took of one corner my first chess board... I was resuming leather work after about 25 years of inactivity. I also have another photo of one I did with the exact same pattern about a year later. I really cringe when I look at the first one. Kate Quote
Contributing Member rdb Posted February 6, 2008 Contributing Member Report Posted February 6, 2008 Kate..they are both beautiful. Never regret...lol That second one shows about 6000% difference...wow..in one year! Quote
Ambassador abn Posted February 6, 2008 Ambassador Report Posted February 6, 2008 Following on to Kate's post, here's a key fob I created in 2006, and the same design executed about six months later... Quote
Kevin King Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Posted February 6, 2008 Ok, be nice, cuz this was my very first leather project EVER. It was also my first experience with making a fiberglass seat pan. It was made from bellies and bootlace. Quote
Ambassador abn Posted February 6, 2008 Ambassador Report Posted February 6, 2008 That's your first project? (Just kidding, of course!) :D Dude, my first leather project hit the kitchen garbage can, along with the second and third! I think I still have maybe the fourth thing I ever did, but there's no way anyone else is seeing it! I consider myself a slooooow starter -- especially looking at Freak's first project. Quote
Members wildrose Posted February 7, 2008 Members Report Posted February 7, 2008 Here are some pretty early ones from me...UGH! Hard to look at! Quote
Kevin King Posted February 7, 2008 Author Report Posted February 7, 2008 I love looking at my old stuff. Reminds me of how far i've come and whats to come. When I made that first seat, I thought it was the coolest thing ever, as did alot of people I knew. Within an hour of having it completed, I was at the harley shop and a guy offered me $500 for it (insert lightbulb here). Quote
ETW Grumpy Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 Is there a prize for the worst looking first?? I keep the first thing I ever tooled on my bench to remind me that I have improved (somewhat). I'll try to get a pic of it tomorrow and post it. Quote

Members Spider Posted February 7, 2008 Members Report Posted February 7, 2008 If there is a prize for worst first then scroll up to my post and click on my profile and pm me. I'll give you my address to send the prize. I still love my first ever. I got so much out of it and felt so good about it. That is what I keep out of it. Quote
Members Hidemechanic Posted February 10, 2008 Members Report Posted February 10, 2008 Elton Joorisity's Bright green chaps inspired me to dig out the pics of my first rodeo chaps. Thank goodness they were for High School Rodeo.GH Quote
TracyMoss Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 I don't think you have anything to be embarressed about. Tha first pair I did went in the profit bin about three times. Quote
Sandy Robbins Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 (edited) This is my first saddle. Here it is not quite finished. Sandy Edited March 2, 2008 by Johanna reduced pic size Quote
Pip Posted March 1, 2008 Report Posted March 1, 2008 My first and second tooled belt pouches, the second one falls off your belt anytime you bend, or breath... but i still like it, the depth of carving is really shallow, cause i couldn't use a mallet, we had complaints from the neighbours, after I made the first one. It took ages to make and it has sat in my leather box ever since cause it don't work as it should.... D'oh. The neighbours have moved since then, oops! and the neighbours on tother side like to see what I make, so don't complain. Quote
Members Spider Posted March 2, 2008 Members Report Posted March 2, 2008 Hey Pip, I really like the first one. Very rugged looking. I like stuff like that. Looks broken in. Quote
JRLeather2 Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 My very first pictorial carving, tooled in a weekend. Then painted on and off for a year, almost went in the dumpster several times during the painting process........many thanks to my friend and teacher Jerry.......and Clyde, and Cliff....... Quote
Contributing Member BillB Posted March 21, 2008 Contributing Member Report Posted March 21, 2008 It took me a while to finds some of the work I did back in 1970's. Here are three pieces that I was able to find. The first is from a Tandy brief case kit. It was a hard shell brief case with a leather insert in the middle of the top. The second is the seat from a tri-cornered camp stool I did for my father. The third is a purse I did for my wife. It also did service as a diaper bag. Quote
Members smudley Posted March 23, 2008 Members Report Posted March 23, 2008 Here are a few of my firsts. I especially like those leggins, or at least I think that's what they're called. The ones that cover your calves and protect them from the exhaust and hot engine. Where can I get the pattern for a set? I've been wanting to make some for when I don't want to wear full chaps, but haven't seen patterns anywhere I've looked. How are they fastened, and how do you keep them from falling down a little?
