Members gregrlevy Posted July 12, 2020 Members Report Posted July 12, 2020 Hi Can deer skin be tanned similar to 2.0 to 2.5 oz. vegtan leather? I'm looking to make wallets out of deer leather. The only deer leather I can find is soft and doesn't have enough body. I have a source for deer but need to know if I can get it tanned like I need. Thanks Greg Quote
Contributing Member fredk Posted July 12, 2020 Contributing Member Report Posted July 12, 2020 (edited) As far as I am aware, Yes it can be. I had some deer skins, some were as soft and limp as bit of tissue paper, I also had some which was thinner than the soft skins but was very much stiffer, almost like thin cardboard or heavy paper. In my case the thin stiff was too thin for wallets so was used to cover some shields and as a liner in shoulder bags. Edited July 12, 2020 by fredk Quote
CFM chuck123wapati Posted July 12, 2020 CFM Report Posted July 12, 2020 yes you can veg tan it but it still will be a thin leather so may still be to soft for your purpose. here is a link to some good info.https://braintan.com/barktan/1basics.htm Quote
