How do I remove this clear coat

Started to oil a squeaky old saddle today just to discover it has some kind of clear coat on it. When I flex the leather the cleat coat cracks. How do I get this clear stuff off?

Try denatured alcohol in an inconspicuous spot. It will remove SOME finishes.
