Sewing with the thread sock on?

Not wanting to hijack one of the other threads. 

Am I correct that you leave the thread sock on when sewing, or is it just for storage?

If it's left on, I assume I'd need to adjust my tension "downstream" .

Your assumption is correct. If you leave a thread sock on while sewing, adjust the top tension to compensate for any additional drag on the thread.

A thread sock is frequently used when the thread falls down the cone or “puddles”. It can add tension. An alternate solution is to use a foam pad under the cone to prevent the thread from catching under the cone. An unused mouse pad works well.

it may depend on the thread sock and how tight it is on the cone but I leave it on  (the fine white ones) - no issues and no need for adjusting tension so far.
