Singer 51w-25 post bed machine

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a Singer 51w-25.  I want to purchase a few parts for it, but cannot find any information about it at all.  I haven't even been able to find another example of one online anywhere.  Can anyone tell me what parts may be interchangeable from other post bed machines?  I don't really know anything about the type or model of this machine.  Any information would be appreciated. Thank you,

Jesse

Please post pictures of your machine. There were 2 Types of 51w machines and early and and a later model.

Maybe this helps a little bit:

I am on vacation at the moment, so I don't have any good photos at this time. I attached what I have.   I want to thank your for your replies to my questions.  The post about your restoration of the singer 51wSV2 machine was actually the reason I joined the forum.   I was hoping someone could answer some questions that were not covered in those posts as well as offer some further explanation on the topics you covered.  I have 5 sewing machines but am a novice at best.  I bought the brother double needle and this machine from an auction for the Maryland department of corrections.  Both of them were used to manufacture shoes and garments for inmates by inmates.  Pretty interesting history I think.  At least the little bit I do know. Thanks again!

I can tell you that this model is a light duty straight stitch machine with a fixed presser foot and bottom feed. It uses G size bobbins which are also used in the Singer 111 series machines. I have a walking foot version called the model 168. I use #69 or #92 thread in it. It is a great machine for sewing hats, ball caps, bags, etc. Basically, it sews around the tall, narrow post. If it can fit over the post you can sew it.

Fantastic.  Thank you for the info. I actually purchased it to sew bags and shoes where my consew 226 is lacking.  Especially when I comes to stitching bags.  Any idea how to adjust the feed dog height?  It seems that the feed dogs do not actually "grab" the work piece and feed it through the to stitch.  They sit about 1-2 mm above the needle plate at their highest point won't feed.  I can't really diagnose the issue.  I don't know where to really start. There isn't a vibrating walking foot so it isn't a compound feed.  I assume the feed dog is the only feeding mechanism?

loosen this screw and you can raise or lower the feed dog. Removing the front plate (held by 4 screws) makes it a bit easier.

Yes, that´s the only mechanism.

Have you checked the stitch length adjuster? Lever up is short lever down is longer.

If the lever does not move then loosen the set screw on the front side

You are a saint.  Thank you.  Thank you.  Thank you!  I will give that a go when I return home.   I also plan to attempt to refurbish this machine as much as I can.   When you powder coated yours, did you remove any of the internals when you were curing it in an oven?
