Tooling Leather that has a finish?

I used some fiebings leather balm on some 4oz vegtan for the outside piece of a wallet, originally intending to just make a plain wallet. It's only a practice piece as I'm still getting the hang of leatherworking. Later I decided I actually wanted to tool the piece (completely forgetting I had used the balm the day before) and went to wet it and it beaded up of course. Is there a way to tool the leather with the balm still on it or do I need to remove the balm first? If the latter, is the process even worth doing or should I build the plain wallet and just tool something else?

If you have the leather, practice, practice, practice.  :-)

Keep the plain wallet (or give as gift) and make another one from scratch with the tooling.
