Tool standards for edgers - are there any?

Recommended Posts

I am hoping to attend the SW Leatherworkers Conference in Prescott AZ in two weeks. A class I am hoping to join asks students to bring the following:

one medium sized (#3/4) French skiver, #3 and #5 common edge bevelers.

My question is based on the fact I don't see standards in this industry. And my complaint starts with Tandy because their own product and the Craftool edgers they also sell don't even agree. How many others are there with their own version of what a #3 edger cuts?

I bought a 10mm French skiver what number does this relate to in the "common" parlance?

Is there a chart anywhere?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure there is a standard. I have a #0 that takes off more than either of my #1s. Unless you're dealing with very thin leather, I'm not sure it will make much difference.

Can you contact the teacher to ask what exactly he/she means? Or, if there are tool vendors at the conference, just take from home what you have and buy there whatever else you really need.
