Haft / Ferrule / Collet For Awl Handles

Recommended Posts

G'day, I'm new here and I think this site looks like an amazing resource! I'm very glad I found it :)

I am looking at making awl handles, however I have been struggling to find a supplier for a quality Ferrule.

If anyone knew of a supplier of such an item I would be very grateful :)

Thank you for your time, all the best for the new year!

Josh

G`day Josh. I have no source for sewing awl handles to suggest. I have though an old awl handle which I´m going to duplicate, and I have found out that a possible start for a ferrule would be a .22 Hornet cartridge brass would be a start, to make a ferrule for a sewing awl. I´ll turn the handle from moose antler.

Thanks for the reply oldtimer

That sounds like it will be a nice awl

I could make a plain ferrule like that easily enough just like yourself, however I'm after more of a "collet" style which would screw and unscrew to replace blades.

Cheers

Josh

I have searched for collets and haven't come up with anything really suitable.

The Dremel Multi-pro comes close

You can get it for $10-$12 at places like Amazon.

I think the best course would be to buy a CS Osbourne haft on ebay like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/C-S-Osborne-142-Palm-Awl-Haft-/110836956026. For under $20 shipped, you would have a good awl haft and you could replace the wood if you wanted something custom.

Look for "Pin Chuck".

Look at "pin vises." They come with collet chucks for various diameters, and you can buy just the ones for the diameter(s) you need. The body can be cut and pressed / glued into your handle. Enco, as mentioned above, carries them:

Good stuff. I have a pin vise but the diameter is about 1". Some of those from Enco are much better, look to be about 1/2".

If you want something heavier look at mini drill chucks.

That looks just about perfect.

It's very doable, I had this made in about an hour.

An old mini chuck I had kicking around and never used will now get used.
