Lighter weight leathers can be sewn on home machines, but the tough stuff requires commercial or industrial sewing machines. They can be tricky to set up and operate, but can't be beat for production work.

I read in another post that it's possible to hand crank a powered stitching machine, which is especially nice when you have to make a tricky manuever such as cornering on pockets. I can hand crank my Baby Bull fine. It has no speed reducer. My Super Bull, on the other hand, has a speed reducer and is a bear to hand crank. Is there a way to make hand cranking on this machine easier? Ed

Hi all. Ive been doing leather work for a while now and have bought some powered sewing machines for mostly my other projects (not leather). However, ive been looking for a sewing machine to start sewing leather. Do any of you use powered (elecric) sewing machine? If so, what brand/model do you have and if there are any things you like/dislke. I noticed that most state a pressor foot height/capacity. is that number a real stating of capacity of the machine or is it BS? I will most likely not be sewing any 3/4" material, but from my past experience, i could always use 1/4" more then what the machine could give. im looking for: > forward/reverse > ~ 245 …

I have a Singer leather sewing machine that dates back to around the 1930s that I need to get a treddle for as well as needles and may need replacement parts in the future. There was a machine shop that I went to in New Orleans for all that but they were flooded in Katrina and shut down soon afterwards. Does any one know where I can go or are looking to sell a machine. Hand stitching is nice and good for meditation but it is taking up time I need to finish other projects.
