A friend of my son asked me to fix her saddle, the stirrup leather on the mounting side had broken over half way. It was a fairly nice Billy Cook barrel racing saddle I believe. It seemed simple to replace a 2.5 in wide strap of 14 oz leather, . . . sew on a backer strip, . . . punch some holes. I started to remove the old stirrup leather, then is when it became fun. IS THERE A TOOL that saddlers have tucked away in the recesses of secret areas that assist in un-screwing the conchos? I was only able to get them off because I have excellent finger strength, . . . and just grabbed them and hogged em out of their holes. Just lookin for some direction, guys, . . . in ca…

A friend asked me if I could find out who makes the official saddles of the Spanish Riding School. Does anyone know? This is where I hope our European connections can help out!

I have an older saddle that is grimy and dirty, and in desperate need of a deep cleaning. It has been left out in a barn, unprotected. While reading various forums and topics about saddle restorations, I finally need help in purchasing specific items. So far, I have read that I need the following: Fiebrings Yellow Paste (what is this, the yellow saddle soap?) A Deglazer (ethyl acetate) Fiebings Leather New Bick 1 Resolene Saddle Oil (Fiebrings Pure Neatsfoot Oil) Tan Kote or Bag Kote Montana Pitchblend Lexol Leather Cleaner Now, my concerns are as follows: Do I need all these items? Which ones do I really need? And if I need all these things, in which seque…

Howdy all I am just starting my first saddle from scratch and I am trying to under stand better how you guys do your padded seats. 1. are you still making a strainer and forming a seat and then adding foam, and shaping the foam? 2. are you inlaying the padded seat leather or on laying? 3. would you post some pictures and go in to some detail as to your method of doing a padded seat. thanks so much Josh

We just wanted to let people know that we have added a couple more sections to our website. There are a number of pages with pictures of Rod Building a Saddle Tree here http://www.rodnikkel.com/content/index.php/building-a-saddle-tree/ . This isn't a tutorial but it does show how we build trees. These pictures just show how we build our trees. A lot of hand made tree makers do it in a similar, but not identical manner. Some do it differently, and the production shops are quite different in their methods. We say that every tree maker does things differently for a reason! And then there is the Tour of the Tree Shop here http://www.rodnikkel.com/content/index.php…

One of our boarders is considering an Australian saddle for her gaited horse. She has come to me (?) for advice and I am not sufficiently knowledgeable on Australian saddles beyond the fact that there is a lot of knock offs and crap being sold as such. So I turn to you folks for mentoring on this subject. She is considering a Bates and a Syd Hill. She would like to consider a Toowoomba but fears they are out of her price range. She has a TWH x RMH cross who has medium withers, broad through the shoulders but short backed. Thanks for any help.
