ekistler1971 Report post Posted November 23, 2014 First time poster,Hoping someone can point me in the right direction here...I picked up a Juki 563. I went over the machine looking for obviously broken parts, cleaned the old dirt away and lubed all the parts. Thread is bonded polyester t-90. Upholstery grade vinyl. Needle is new 135x17 110/18. I am trying to get it up and running and I'm having an issue with it snapping the top thread below the material on almost every pass. I have been running it in by hand to test it and it does grab the bobbin thread and feed it up. The problem seems to be after the second stitch I feel the machine start to bind and then release. It looks like something in the bobbin assembly is binding in the thread and then breaking it.I was assuming that since it grabbed the bobbin thread that it was timed close to correct. Here are some pictures. I assume it is something simple because the break is so consistent. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks, Eric

Geneva Report post Posted November 23, 2014 You need a larger needle with the leather point on it maybe a 140/22.
ekistler1971 Report post Posted November 23, 2014 Thanks for the replys. I actually started with a 130/21 needle and it exhibited the same issues. I went to a upholstery supply shop and they suggested the 110/18 needles. Do you feel that 1 additional size above the 130/21 would be enough to fix the issue? Thanks again! SARK9 Report post Posted November 23, 2014 It LOOKS (but I'm not positive) like your thread is making a loop over the pin which prevents the tension disks from rotating before it enters the thread control disks. Check the path of the upper thread. It usually exits the tension disks going straight down into the control disk. -DC
SARK9 Report post Posted November 23, 2014 (edited) Shoot. I just noticed that your hinged bobbin latch is pointing at about 10:00 o'clock, while all three of mine point at about 1:00. I can see that the tab on the bobbin basket isn't correctly seated in the notch in the underside of your needle plate. That's the problem....the whole thing is able to rotate. -DC Edited November 23, 2014 by SARK9
ekistler1971 Report post Posted November 23, 2014 THANKS A BUNCH DC!!!! That was it! I never even thought to check the bobbin position. I removed the retainer screws and moved it to match yours and voila! perfect stiching, even in reverse!!! I picked the machine up for $200 in an estate sale here in Phoenix and I thought maybe I was ending up with a serious repair job... Wheww.... Again, thanks to everyone for the kind responses! Now it's time to try my hand at some seat re-upholstery. I'm sure I'll be back to pester you all for some more of your knowledge. LOL Eric
