I finished my cowboy rig. It was a pattern package from Tandy and originally done by Will Ghromley for the movie 3:10 to Yuma. I posted a picture of the holster here some time ago and now it is all done. I hope I have not posted this picture before. Age has taken a toll on my memory. Anyway I hope everyone enjoys it and let me know what you think of it. Larry

I'm sorry camano ridge, i didn't make it clear what I'm trying to do. I want the velcro to be on the loop that will go around my belt. Thanks for helping me. Larry

It's going to be a thumb break.

I want to make a holster and use Velcro as the fastener for the flap. How to I attach the two pieces? Thanks, Larry

Holster Thumb Break Hardware
Larry replied to Clay B's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks , camano ridge, I looked at one site and the minimum order was 1,000. I am a hobbyist and would never use that amount. I'll get ten or so from bluegunstore.com. Thanks again for some good photos and the leads for the parts. One question, what is the name of the item at the top of the metal spring piece? Can I get it also at bluegunstore? I just need to know what it is called and I'll order some. Larry -
Holster Thumb Break Hardware
Larry replied to Clay B's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
r t warren, this is my first thumb break holster. Would you please give me the steps on how I should go about using the hose clamp. Left hand holster, where does the stiff part go. I don't have a thumb break holster to look and or I think I could figure it out. Thanks, Larry -
45. Auto Threeperson's Holster
Larry replied to Billy Hell's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Billy Hell, that holster is too beautiful to be going through fences and brush and whatever. You really have the carving down. I'm very impressed. In my opinion it is easy to tell when someone has mastered carving. That is by the knife work used for accents. Very nicely done. I'm sure your brother will treasure that holster. If you get a chance, take a look at my "Hand of God" rig on this Show Off forum. And Stu, thank you for the kind words. Larry -
45. Auto Threeperson's Holster
Larry replied to Billy Hell's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Very nice work there Billy Hell. Here is one that I did years ago when I was just starting leatherwork. I took a photo of the Tom Threepersons original holster made for the .38 special. I then traced the carving and printed it out and put it on tracing paper. I then copied that to the leather. It is very close to the original that was made by S.D. Myers Saddlery in El Paso Texas around 1920. -
Thanks, Wild Bill, for the nice things you said about my cowboy rig. I live out in the country about 15 miles south of Albany, between Baconton and Sales City. You sure live in a beautiful part of Georgia, especially now with the leaves changing. Judging by your name, Wild Bill46, I assume you are two years younger than me. I was born in '44. Larry

Finally finished my version of Will Ghromley's 3:10 to Yuma "Hand of God" rig. I made it for my grandson who plans to enter the military soon. I got the pattern from Tandy and it is for an exact replica of the rig that Russell Crowe wore in the movie. I do not have the skills that Will has so I had to make it the best way I could. The carving on the holster is very close and the tooling on the belt is like the original. Thanks everyone for letting me share something I am very proud of. Larry

Thanks, JL, I kinda figured that, but wanted to know for sure. Larry

Just bought a bone folder from Tandy. It has groves on the semi circle at the top. What are these used for? Thanks everyone, Larry

Thanks, camano ridge, I'll check out the patterns forum. Appreciate the help.

I am making a cowboy rig for my grandson. He lives in another state and all I have is his jean size. He wears a size 32 jeans. I would like to make the belt where he could grow into it. What length should I use for the middle hole from the buckle center? I hope that I have given enough information. Thanks everyone. Larry

Tom Threepersons As A First Holster?
Larry replied to weconway's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Hi William, I did a lot of research about Tom Threepersons and found he was quite an individual. I found a picture of his holster and tried to make mine as close to it as possible. I made my Threeepersons holster after about ten or twelve practice projects so I could get the carving as good as I could. I made it for my S&W M66. I have been doing leather work about two years now and I love it. I made a drawing of the carving on his holster and have it in .jpg format. If you like it and want it, I will e-mail it to you. If you follow all the information the guys and gals here have given you, you will do find. Read the book and plan your holster. Remember, it's just leather and if it doesn't satisfy you, do it again. You'll have fun and you'll have a holster you can wear with pride. Much better than buying one. I also made a six round cartridge holder to fit on the belt next to the holster. -
Another Look At The Threepersons-Style
Larry replied to Lobo's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I'm not only newto leatherwork, but I'm also new to forums. I realized today what I haddone. Lobo, I apologize. This post is about your work and I should not have posted anything exceptwhat I said about the beautiful work you did. I hope you and the othermembers did not take any offense. It was a rookie mistake and I feel bad. I feel especiallybad since Lobo helped me several times with problems that only his experience could solve. Maybe themoderator can delete my post, if so I would appreciate it. If some one cantell me how to get the floral design on the forum, I'll start another post and try toget it out there. Again, Lobo, I apologize. Larry -
Another Look At The Threepersons-Style
Larry replied to Lobo's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Beautiful work Lobo, as usual... I also did a Tom Threepeson and I tried to get it as close to what they say is the original, but who really knows. I copied the picture of his holster off the internet. Then I sized it in a Graphics Software Program then traced the design as close as I could. I was so interested in the Threeperson story that I had to do one. He was quite a man and the holster design he came up with was used by lawmen until just recently. Anyway here it is. No where near the quality that you have in your holster. I've only been doing this for about a year and have only done 5 or 6 holsters. The second photo shows how much I need to work or my knife work, but I'm learning and I love it. It obvious the person that did your holster carving is a real artist. I can only hope that someday I'll be half as good. Larry -
Sold My First Holster
Larry replied to steelhawk's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
He should be happy with it, it is beautiful. You must be very proud. And, it must feel great to know as of yesterday, you are now a working artist. Keep up the good work. Larry -
Thanks, Kate... I always learn something new on this great forum and it is invaluable for a beginner like me. You say you would use something a little heavier than the pig skin, what would that be? Thanks again, Larry

I want to make the Traveling Secretary in the A.S. book on Cases. I have some veg tanned 6-7 oz for the outside and it calls for 2 - 2 1/2 oz for the lining. Tandy has veg tanned splits and this is their description. These economical natural veg-tanned splits are perfect for youth group banners, patrol flags, small projects, log carriers, inexpensive camp projects and more. You can decorate with Eco-Flo Cova Colors or Sharpie Markers. Approx. 2 oz. Avg.13 sq. ft. I want to use it for a journal I need to keep for competitive pistol shooting. I need it to be a little more sturdy than the original intended use. Would this make a good lining for the Traveling Secretary? I have some pig skin, but it seems too thin. If I cut a slit in it for envelopes, I can see it tearing after a while. Instead of envelopes, in that area I would be put training material and targets instead. I'm new to the art of leather working. Thanks for your advice and opinions. Larry

Gottya MADMAX22, me and you are a lot alike. I never have that kind of thing happen to me either. I do read where it does happen to other folks though. Joking aside, I appreciate the tip about the barge and thin leather. That's one I need to remember. Thanks again, Larry

Thanks MADMAX22, I hoped that the thinner stuff would work better. I like the idea with the 3M too. I've been using Barge and that glue isn't cheap. Thanks again. Larry
