I'm sure this has been addressed, but I can't find it with a search,. but is there a substitute to Fiebing's Leather Dye Reducer that I can get from walmart or Lowes? It smells like denatured alcohol.

Good question. I don't know the answer, but I've been dyeing firsm and then acrylic paint. I then resolene, and antique. i go over the acrylic paint again just to highlight the areas that have darkenend, and finally spray on fiebings finish.

Another step is to spray some lighter fluid on the steel wool and set on fire. Steel wool usually has some type of coating on it to prevent it from rusting. This will speed the vingaroon making process up.

Post the same question on this person's deviantart thread. http://shendorion.deviantart.com/ The lighter brown looks like Fiebings pro light brown deluted 5 or 6 to one, and maybe antiqued.

I'm lookin to make and axe sheath or two and want to use some copper rivets. I'm looking for advice as to what guage rivet would you recommend. #9 or #12.

I get some leather from a Menonite saddle and harness shop in Dayton Virginia. He uses alot of drum dyed black leather. He buys it from Wickett and Craig and another place in Ohio. I'm guessing Weavers.

Thanks for the help. What finally worked for me was to brush the vingaroon on and then neutralize it quickly which makes the leather a dull grey. I then hand painted the USMC black on my image. It worked, so now I just need to carve the right image for this.

Is there a finish that dries flatter than Satin Sheen?
I am unsuccesfully trying something new with the dye on a sheath that I'm working on. I am initially vingarooning the entire sheath. I then brush USMC black dye on the image that I have carved to get it to stand out. The black dye will naturally shine with a little buffing, but I want to keep the rest of the sheath the dull grey/black that you get with vingaroon. Once I put any of the finishes I have on the sheath, I lose the effect that I am trying to achieve.

I saw this thread on the Blade forum. I know that I could never line up the hexagon stamp evenly, but I thought some of you might like and try this idea.

Nice work, but your name shouldn't be tap tap tap, it should be stitch stitch stitch. I made one guitar strap with a suede liner. Emphasis on one! Took forever to sew.

Really well done! I generally only like staining leather, but the slight use of paint on the eagle is a nice touch!
