I just finished this last week and kind of sad that my first one is done but really happy too. I have learned a lot and hopefully I'll get better with my next attempt. www.neveshorses.com

Wow that's awesome. It's so space age looking. Is it made out of HDPE? Are you selling these?

This is one I made out of a couple pieces of pipe. It works great but needs a set of feet to secure it to the table. I also made a simple skiver that I'll post some pictures of. These are in more detail on youtube. Here's the skiver:

I really like your string cutter. I made one kind of similar but it's not as neat. What kind of metal is that? Did you make it?
-
how many finished strings can you cut from the 3/4" rough cut string? Just one?

I just thought i'd ask some you saddlemakers out there how you attach your riggings and make them exactly equal on both sides. I saw Dusty Johnson's way of doing it and also the Stohlman's way. In making my first saddle I did it the way Bruce Cheaney show's in his video by measuring from the table to the ruler placed inside the d-rings. I tried to find this thread out there before I started a new post but didn't see anything. What is a good way to do this? Or if there is already a thread about this could someone point me that direction? Thanks.

You can check out mine I made I posted a video of it on youtube. I need to weld some feet so I can attach it to my bench. Now i just hold it in a vice.

I found a really simple one in bruce grants book but I was wondering what people thought I should use for something like this:

I made a video of mine on youtube a while ago. it's not quite as fancy but it works great. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>I hope that helps. I need to make some feet so I can bolt it to the table. Now i just clamp it in my vice.

Hey Cool, That's my video! Thanks. I actually found an really easy way to do it without any tools at. I'll take some pictures and post it soon.

I remember reading in Bruce Grants book about using yellow laundry soap to instead of saddle soap mainly because it's cheaper. I didn't really know what he meant so I went to teh grocery store and found and old fashioned looking bar of yellow soap. I don't know if that's what he meant but it seemed to work great for me and was really cheap. Has anyone else used this?

Thanks so much guys. I'll try that next time. By the way I love both of your websites. You're great saddlemakers. Thanks for the help.

I built my first saddle and after I finished the cantle binding it looked kind of rough. The front side doesn't look too bad but on the back side I can't get the stitches to exit where I want them. Is there any trick to this or is it just practice? Thanks folks. This is ideally what I'm looking for:
-
In all the books I've looked at the stitching on the horn cap doesn't go around 360 degrees which is what I want to do. Does anyone have some basic patterns that I could use for the first piece? I have the one pattern that looks like it wings that wrap around. This is what I need to learn how to do. not this. Thanks.
