I consider this to be my 'Masterpiece', as I had my first lesson at our local guild (BlueGrass Leather Guild) about 1 year ago.. This Rig is made for an Umberti .45 single action w/ 6" barrel and a knife that has a 10" blade and a heavy ceramic handle; I used 8-10oz. W&C leather. My Customer was very involved in the design, he had some very specific wants. So we perused "Packing Iron" and developed a plan incorporating many of the design elements found on different rigs First and foremost, he wanted the color to match the colors of the pistol grips, He wanted everything to have basket weave, and he wanted a design on each of the 42 cartridge loops.and a "Hellacious Drop" . There were many other specified wants and I managed to fulfill the aspects that were practical , and turned out a good looking (IMHO) rig. Hi Folks, I am trying to put a mexican round weave on a money clip for a customer ( she wanted a cardinal on it and I felt it could use a nice border) . I have never tried carving from a picture before, and I want every aspect of the project to be perfect. However, I can't quite get the corner to look quite right. I either see the edge thru it or there's an unsightly bulge.Can somebody PLEASE tell me how to make the corner while braiding a mexican round weave? I've looked at tutorials, etc. , but they are not clear (or i just don't get it) when they say, "either go through the corner hole 5 times or go through the one before the hole 3 times, then the corner 4 times, then the one after 3 times." I understand that the strand passes through the hole x # of times, but what i dont get is what is happening on top. I've searched, looked at pix, etc. and it sounds like they are saying to just go straight around, but it doesn't look like that in the pictures I've seen, they look to be woven. ... In the pic below, you can see where I fudged the corners, but i'd rather it be done correctly. Any help or advice will be most humbly appreciated, (any advice on the carving would be welcome too). Here's my first attempt at a Cows knee. I made it from pliable leather so you could stash it in your possibles bag. The last pic has it wrapped on my Henry rifle to give me a sense of scale, seems like it will fit. Thanx again for all the help and friendly advice .

Thats more in line with what i imagined he was asking for. Thank you Luke, the picture is just what i have been searching for, & will enable me to make just what my customer needs. i love the deep, rich color of the piece. I should have known to start my search here, I'd have found it a lot sooner. Do you happen to know approx, how tall it is at the peak?

WOW! Mike that's beautiful. Now I know why they call it a cow's leg. because i had thought the customer described a small piece that covered just the flint and pan. But what you have LOOKS like a cow's leg, makes much more sense now. Thanx for the great photos & for clearing that up.

Howdy Y'all, I have a customer who is into the authentic 18th century blackpowder experience. He asked me if I could make him an hand sewn "cow's leg" to cover the flint lock &keep it dry. Howdy Neighbor! I just have to say that those are beautiful. Great color combo and textures, looks like yer an old hand at em, not a first time out. . these are my first bracers,, inspired by one of my teenager's friends. They were harder to make than it looked. They are triple layered (including the part that looks like a key fob -it's not)and functional. They still need a concho or medallion to complete them, but it was a good learning experience.

Hey Skippy< I think you're doing great. I too am a newbie (had 1st lesson last Feb.) and am also doing a double rig, although I've only gotten the one holster almost done and part of the belt. (had to set it for a bit aside to make a purse for a birthday present) I especially like the pattern; did you make that yourself? or from a pattern book?

Hey Doc, Thanx for answering, and I'm sure you meant Will Ghormley, (who, in my humble opinion, is truly a Master Craftsman). I'll check his sight again. I've studied his site, especially the 3:10 to Yuma holster tutorial. I like how he "aged" the leather. Great Info.

Hi All, I'm kinda new to all this (first lesson in Feb.'10) but I have the bug REAL BAD! My question is concerning a Buscadero gun belt. I'm making a 3" belt, I got the curve from tracing my own worn belt, and I know where i want the Holsters to hang; what I don't know is how much extra is the drop (i'm guessing another 2") and the dimensions of the slot (thickness & width) and where in the drop do you suggest placing the slot. My best guess is an additional 2" added to make the drop. Measured from the bottom of the rest of the belt, i was going to go downward 3/4", make a 1/2" slot, leaving another 3/4". and my first guess was that the slot should be 6" long, but that seems excessive. ANY advice or help would be GREATLY appreciated. THANX (Man, I love this stuff and this site is a real Blessing)
