TN leather replied to TN leather's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
How do I check this? where would I find and after market roller or nylon foot? -
How did you attach the beads? do you have any pictures showing the end of the bead string? Looks great.

A friend of mine who does not sew was getting rid of an old Morse zig-zag 4300 fotomatic and ask if I wanted (for free) to try on leather. I took it. It appears to be 1960's model machine, and IS VERY SOILD. everything appears to be heavy duty ( almost industrial) metal parts. I cleaned it up, oiled it and it works great with fabric ; plus it had everything with it.( right down to the light bulb, and manual) That is about as far as my knowledge goes. I am trying to read up on things here and elsewhere (on the machine in general) but I am hoping to get a quick answer if I am wasting my time. I know I need leather needles, but thread types, compound feeds, walking feet are a greek to me. I am hoping to use it on 4oz or less leather for bags etc. (normally stone oiled)

Mini-30 Stock Wrap / Cheek Pad
TN leather replied to TN leather's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
moe Not a real weight change. the mini is front heavy anyway so it blances it out some when the mags are loaded. Dritclod You are correct. The reason I made it so you could remove the mag pouch is so I could put a 5 round mag pouch there when hunting (not sure this is my first choice for hunting but it does not make a bad brush gun.) -
Well I am not really sure I am ready for prime time but here goes..... I have only been working at leather work a few months in my spare time so I am happy with the results. This is a stock wrap with a magzine pouch and cheek pad. I figured since I may want to use a smaller magzine if hunting or take the cheek pad off when using no scope, then I would make it modular. I used industral stregnth velcro and sewed it on for extra hold. (a great way to gum up needles in case you have any you want to waste. live and learn) The flash makes the finish look bad but it is not nearly so ruff in person. Body and tops of the attachments is 4-5oz and the backing for the cheek rest and mag pouch is 8-10 oz. (I just had it laying around.)

The part I was making had flesh side to the rough part of the bag so the imprint did not really show up, but that is something I would not have thought about. Good to know.

First holster for first gun
TN leather replied to Crystal's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
WOW! That is nice work. I do not think my sticthing will ever look that clean. I am more of a revolver man myself, but I did look at these and really like the laser sight coming with it. -
So I was molding some leather over a form last night, and I was being lazy and had not made a 2 part mold. So I started pininig it to my cork board. Then I got an Idea. Why not mold it over the form using the vacumn sealer (food saver). It worked great at making the shape in the leather, but it will no dry out, but just wanted to throw it out there just in case someone wants to run with it.

I think I am going with molded rather than 3 part box. I formed some over the mag ( plastic covered ) last night and tacked it down. If this does not work I will try something else.. 2 piece mold or 3 part box.

I want to make a wet formed pouch for a rifle magazine (20 round) that has a slight curve to it. I am familar enough with how to form leather for a molded bag etc. I was wondering if forming over an item that is slightly curved will give me fits when form / drying and sewing? has anyone tried this? anyone have and words of warning? I normally would just jump in but I guess age is teaching me a thing or two. something like this only not attached to the belt, and moled rather than box stitched http://www.ima-usa.com/product_info.php/products_id/1826 Also any words of advice on hand sewing velcro on leather.

Can you show some construction details like how the belly / midsection peice is attached? Also does the shoulder peice (spadula) attach? if so how? how did you form the shoulder? Is chest double layered? does it have padding? Sorry for all the questions but I am now going to try to build one in the theme of my favorite college football team. (you know to wear to the game.....hehee)

I am not much of an armor person but that is awe inspiring. That is some of the most fantastic work I have seen. Where would one who has never made armor before get at pattern? Are there any good books etc.?
