  1. Right on! Nice machine from what everyone says.
  2. Hello, What differences in free or paid membership is there? Is the memership 10, 20 or whatever we can give? Thank You Ryan Name: Ryan Lingner UserName: Iron Pounder IP Address: 69.247.160.141 Email Address: ryanlingner@yahoo.com
  3. I do have a Roland vinyl cutter in the shop. I just tried to do a mask for a logo and things didn't turn out too hot. Here is what I did. Normally I dye with one of my airbrushes but i have them all ready to go for a small job this weekend so I just used a piece of wool. I cut out the vinyl logo stuck it to a scrap of leather ran dye over the whole piece of leather lightly and then removed the vinyl mask a few minutes later. The dye didn't stop at the edge of the vinyl and ended up junk. Would this only work with paint and not dye? I normally just free hand everything I do as the design programs I have and me don't get along. I have ahd the cutter just sitting and this topic got me thinking I might have a use for the dang thing at times. Maybe I would have had better results with using the airbrush that I'm used to. Using the cutter would also allow me to make patterns quickly as well, maybe I can find a use for it yet.
  4. Note to self. No Walmart seats or suffer a beat down in the neck, check.
  5. I'm with you guys on the whole Walmart approach. Having said that as a guy trying to put income otgether it has crossed my mind to do on some small stuff to keep the cost down yet customize some. For example I had a girl ask about making a slip cover for her Ipad but wanted the school name and color on it but we couldn't get together on the price due to the amount of time it would have taken me. If I would have just printed (transferred it) I would have gotten the sale but I stuck to my guns and ended up not getting any work out of the project.
  6. Shadowryder, Ya I like that name but there is a guy not far from me, Anvil Customs that does at least some of the stuff I do so can't really use that name. Once you start looking to the internet at url's that aren't taken that are something not too long and works with what you do it really limits you on the names. We are also looking at relocation which of course just makes things that much harder. Leatherrookie, clever name I like it. I could see that brand working well to your market for sure. Within the next day or so we will post our short list of names. Evern though we have tried our best to make sure someone elese isn't using the names we have on our short list I bet someone will know someone using that name. I wish we had a national registry for all names. For example there is 3 leatherworks business names operating just in my town of 60,000 but none of the registered with the state, I just happened onto them.
  7. I've been kicking around making one myself. Just a few things come to mind that may help. I would first check to make sure the push plate on top is in perfect alingment to the cutting board below it. If it is and the cut die is even I don't see how it could cut uneven unless something is flexing. How think is the upper plate and how is it attached? I see the old big clickers go super cheap but never close to me. If everything measures out ok I would put it under a load and remeasure.
  8. I don't know what the Billy method is but guys have been using some form of sublimation transfer process to put pictures on leather and about any other surface for years. I think someone that sold transfer supplies would be able to get you what you needed.
  9. Hello from just into Missouri. We have a few from Kansas on here that I'm sure will chime in at some point. Good luck getting things going.
  10. Kevin, Cool way to market the screen printing you did. I like the simplicity of just using my name as well. At least the dang .com is open... I don't know if you work with other mediums, if so do you think having leather in the name limits you? Instead of leather maybe designs? Ron, the short name thing is true. We have kind of been kicking around a few that I need to kick to the curb for being too long. I have been so tied up with trying to find a place to relocate to that I haven't put the effort in a should and just be done with it. Trying to please my wife and three kids with a new location is proving almost impossible.
  11. Yep thought so but thought I was the only one that tooled leather that way. I tried to think of any other way a guy could get that look but should have known. It seems some think it's the wrong way to tool. In my mind it is the right way as it doesn't weaken the leather. How the right way can be the method the weakens (cut with swivel knife) the leather just seems odd to me. I wouldn't mind sharing ideas as your the only other person I know that tools the way I do. Guess that is what happens when your born left handed and they switch you over to right, I end up doing most everything in life a different way, lol. Love the seats and very nice work to get the foam to shape that nice.
  12. Could you explain how you did the lettering on the seat? Did you use a swivel knife to cut them in?
  13. Katsass, I know what ya mean. My son's nickname is Tiny and he is a big big boy. Ray, The web domains are a big deal trying to nail down a name. The web is what makes it so tough. we have thought of tons of names we really like to find someone else liked them first,ha. Natalie, We like designs as well. I have thought some might think we do logos or something though. I kind of wanted the business name to be a brand name, say what we do, be original, have a .com available, be easy to remember, and be acceptable to a diverse base of customers. Now that isn't asking too much is it? Sylvia, The name generator is fun. Iron Horse Leather is already taken but I did like it. Ron, We like creations as well. Like you say it keeps things open abit. I just finished up an oil tank for a guy tonight for example. Ryan
  14. Ya good ideas for a business name. I guess I'm looking for more of a brand new to market. Thank you to all that replied. We have so many names being kicked around that it's time to narrow them down some. I will post up the top ten when we get it dow to that.
  15. Ha ya that works. What makes a name hard for me is the different types of folks that I have sold to and will sell to. Hard to think of a brand that say the bike community and folks like my parents would also want. Walmart has a blue shirt for 5.00 the same shirt with a brand name on it is 20.00. So the brand name is everything, that product (shirt) had nothing to do with the price.
  16. With so many names out there it is near impossible to have a name that you and you alone use. Makes a case to just use your name.
  17. Jonathan, we do have Lucky Leather do to same reasons down on the list,ha. I do consider myself lucky to still be going for sure. I'm said that I still live on the edge way more than the wife would like. Ferg, see how hard it is to find a name that nobody is using. They aren't registered to do business in my state so it wouldn't be the end of the world as they use the name Maverick Leather Company and we could use Maverick custom leather or something like that. I'm not sure a lot of original names are left. Maybe that is why companies started making up words. Thanks guys for your input, anyone else have an idea?
  18. I have a bunch of new and old edgers that all put just a flat cut on the edge. What I want is one that rounds the edge. Do they sell one or do I have to try and make one?
  19. I have been making stuff here and there for friends and friends of friends but ready to start marketing a bit. I have been asked what my biz name is and I really don't have one. We up to this point have ran everything through a small printing/custom sign biz we have. It is hard to find a name that someone doesn't already have. One thing we notice is artists are given a pass by local gov it seems. The difference is _____ studios and Ryan's Leather Co seems to mean everything for some reason. It's like once you are called something that sounds commercial you are no longer considered an artist? Any thoughts on a good name? I have been told by some that I may be a bit hard headed, I don't know where they get that, lol. Due to a few missteps along lifes path my body is full of titanium and a few names kicked around have played off that, but you would have to know me to get that I think. The one name that sticks in most circles seems to be Maverick Leather Maverick Customs Maverick Customs Leather... My son and I do tend to work in a few mediums (pinstripe, airbrush, wood, metal, glass) so not sure I want to narrow the name down so much. I don't know if being so narrow is good or bad. I think a name easy to remember is of course important.
  20. Ya it seems everyone is very happy with the rig Bob sells.
  21. Bob Does the roller foot set up for a 31 come with everything I need to change over? Can you get by with just the roller foot or do I need to change the feed dogs and plate as well? How much do the parts run? What does the servo motor for it run? If you can't post here just send me a pm.
  22. http://www.ebay.com/...=item19cc8f6131 Anyone use one of these of know anything about them? I see the same unit going from 85-almost 200. I want to put this on a Singer 31-15 to slow it down. I have heard some use the Servo pro500GR how do these units compare? I have been suing a Singer 66 with a hand crank so not used to using a machine that goes that fast.
  23. Wish this site had some good videos of different tooling methods. Youtube doesn't have much that direction. This site is great, you just have to know the right questions to ask.
  24. I will try and email him. Looks like he is still going. I don't have facebook so can't get in touch that way. I must be the only one left on Earth without facebook I think,ha. I bet someone asks if I have one three times a week min.
  25. I couldn't find a general area to put this and saw he had a how to so thought I would put this here. Someone mentioned him doing detailed stitching and suggested I look him up. It appears he may live close to me but not sure he is doing leather anymore. Anyone know if he is still doing leatherwork? He was very active in the forums on several sites and then just disappeared. I'm going to feel like crap if something happened to the guy and I bring this up so forgive me in advance if this is the case.
