  1. I personally like to wet mold and waterproof my sheaths for knives like this. The beeswax treatment for waterproofing just helps keep the wet molded shape stable of a long time. Bring the leather edge just past the ricasso and clamp this to about half the blade thickness during molding. This will keep the knife fairly secure until you want it. I was looking for a picture of one of my larger hunting knives I made with a sheath very similar to what I think you are looking for, but could not find it. I did include a picture of some fishing knives and sheaths I made that are close to what I think you are looking for. Good luck with the project. Bill
  2. I have done a fair number of knife sheaths myself and I plan to try this recipe and compare it what I have been using. I have been using a Howard's Feed-n-Wax which can be purchase at Home Depot strengthened with more melted bees wax. I do a lot of woodworking and have used this as a final finish and decided to try it on leather. It's mainly orange oil and beeswax and penetrates extremely well. Adding the melted beeswax and using a heat gun to drive it in really makes the sheaths rock hard and completely water proof. Works great for the leather collars on a set of rowing oars as well. I am always looking for something new and better. Thanks again, Bill
  3. Forum Management, I just had a brain bit clear and suddenly remembered my account and pass. I apologize for the bother. Thank you, Bill McCaffrey Name: Bill McCaffrey UserName: Billmc IP Address: 74.192.144.108 Email Address: billmc-hm@suddenlink.net
  4. Thanks Big O. Do you have a pic of one you have made? I am still trying to get a good feel for what makes a good holster. I am learning more about what makes a bad holster.
  5. Thanks. I agree with you on the trigger cover after the fact. I just got the bug to do it this morning and did this one to go through the process for the first time. I made many notes on things to do next time.
  6. This was my first attempt at a molded leather holster. I was encouraged by the other great post on this site – thank to all! I used some scrap pieces so there are a few scars. I used a vacuum press to mold the top half. I am a newbie at this and was surprised that the actual labor was only about an hour. I have a few Ruger Blackhawks that I will be making templates for and will post what I come up with. I would be more than happy to leverage anyone else's templates if you already have made them.
  7. Great tutorial! I will try this very soon. Thanks. (I'm a new member and novice leather crafter better woodworker)
