  1. Wanting vinyl to feel/wear/act like leather is about like wanting a frozen pizza to taste like a real pizza. If you try real hard you may convince someone it is just as good. Everyone else will know better. Aaron
  2. I have that book! Bought it a couple years ago on Ebay. Your work is stunning. Aaron
  3. Bob, Letterpress is how I planned on doing this. If I use a song and include the music I will likely have a plate carved to do the impression. If it is just text, I will use font that I have to do it. Aaron
  4. So the more I think about this the two other ideas that I have are to use the Lords prayer or the Footprints poem. I really am not worried about the dificulty of it, more the overall finished product. I do like the idea of the music being included with the words... I looked through some of the Psalter songs too and did not find any that stood out there. Amazing Grace was also my first though. I keep going back and forth on this. Aaron
  5. I am looking for the best song to tool into a Bible cover. My plan is to have a celtic style cross on the front and on the back have the words/music to a song or a hymn. Been thinking about this for a couple days and can not pin down the song to use yet. I am leaning towards a hymn, but not yet sure. Possibly a modern song. I do want it to be a song that everyone will recognise, weather or not they know the words. I am thinking of the layout looking something like below. Input please!
  6. The same reason Tandy still sells gold colored hardware: There are a lot of old people involved in leather work.
  7. Funny you just posted this. I was printing out pictures in another window of masks. Thinking about making one for fun. Basicly, it is wet formed. Get the leather real wet, start stretching and pushing. You will need a wig head to do this unless you have a real face to form it over. Aaron
  8. Forgot to add, all of these are dip dyed. This one was done in british tan, diluted 50/50. Always practice on a sample and let it dry if you are going to be picky about the shade.
  9. It does work, once you get the hang of it. The holster is 2/3 Ox Blood and 1/3 black. It is dark, but not black. The Bible cover is brown (not sure what one), diluted with alcohol.I don't remember what color I used on the Checkbook, but likly was the same as I used on the Bible cover. Aaron
  10. I would use a piece of PVC pipe covered in leather. The pipe is the form, the leather makes it look good. For the separator, cut a wood circle, slide it in the center, screw it in place. Cover it with leather. Aaron
  11. It puts a beaded edge on the side of leather. Hold it in your hand, make a fist around it like you are going to stab yourself in the leg with it. Pull it down the right side of a piece of leather toward you. The longer edge hangs off the side, the shorter edge marks the leather. Aaron
  12. After you clean it it need sair. Lots of airr. If possible hang it near a fan or outside in the wind. It will smell for a long time.
  13. Dilute the dye with isopropyl alcohol. About 1/3 dye and 2/3 alcohol.
  14. It will lighten up as it continues to dry. But, chocolate is very , very dark. Think the color of dark chocolate, not milk chocolate. Also, different tannery processes will make the dye different colors. You need to be carefully about using leather from different tanneries on the same piece. Sometimes the colors do not even resemble each other. If you are unhappy now, wait till you apply dye with a dauber! You will be looking at horribly striped leather. Eithr spray it or dip it, daubers are a bad, bad way to apply. Aaron
  15. I make a lot of wallets and always use 3/4. They are tooled. Aaron
  16. As far as bike stuff, I would recomend you make a tool bag before you make saddle bags. A lot smaller and easier to learn, no need to ballance both sides either. Your main thing you will need to learn is sewing and basic assembly, then all the details that come in between. If you want me to show you some if this I can show you, a few hours playing with things and you will start to get the hang of it. Aaron
  17. Small and discrete. Big, obtuse, marks look like poop. Aaron
  18. David, Tandy has weekly classesclasses. They are very basic. I am not aware of any classes currently from Oregon Leather. They are the only two leather stores in town. The next closest is Oregon Leather in Eugene, last I heard they sometimes have basic classes there. What sort of stuff are you trying to learn? I do a lot of tooling, knife sheathes, holsters and that sort of stuff. I can show you some things if you want. I will also be teaching a class on holsters in about a month at Tandy. If you saw the one on the wall behind the counter, I made that one. It is what the class will be structured off of. I am there sometimes durring the weekly classes too. Search my screan name and you will see some work I have done posted here. Aaron
  19. Kelley, This is Aaron, I was talking to you today at Tandy. LMK if there as anything you neeed help with.
  20. Well, all I can say is if I was unclothed and being measured I would choose the top measurer over the bottom one.
  21. My plan is to have a few started at differant stages so I can jump forward, not spending time on things like sewing and drying. I am hoping to have it similar to a cooking show where they mix something up, slide it in the oven and then pull out the finished cooking dish. Sort of like the Galloping Gormet, just with gun leather. Aaron
  22. Next month I am going to teach a basic how to get started class on holsters. This design seemed to be very basic and relitively easy to explain. If this works out well I hope to move to a few differant styles down the road. Aaron
  23. One of the issues with paypal is they will virtually side with the buyer, reguardless of the facts. Contest this with paypal and they will likely give you your money back. Paypal could care less if you send the product back.
  24. I have to agree, I would recomend starting with a cover rather than bindind it. If you fit it tight it will seem almost like the actual cover. Here is the one I have on my Bible: Aaron
  25. I re-wet all the time and have never had a water mark on anything I have carved. The water here is pretty soft and I always have Pro-Carve in it, not sure if that is why or not. I commonly start a project, let it dry and then start again in a few days. Aaron
