Gun Belt and Holster for the real cowboy
llasso replied to llasso's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
To get the curve. Take a one by one four feet long cut a notch in either end two inches from either end ( on a 45 degree angle) then take a four foot flexable ruler and insert into each notch and you will have the curve -

These straps were a joy to make, hope you like them I have been wanting to make this set of these straps for sometime and finally got the opportunity to do so. As many of you know Roy had three gun belts in his time the first made by Ed Gilmore in 1938, the next made by Bohlin in 1942 and the last made be Nudie in 1949. Nudie also made a set of spur straps to match the holster and gun belt. Both the straps and the gun belt were adorned with GOLD conchos. These were made for an ad campaign in 1949 called “ Goldmine for 49”. This campaign was conducted for the sellers of Roy Rogers products. I can’t afford gold conchos so I decided to have them made in jewelers bronze. The small conchos are 5/8” and the large conchos are 2”. You will notice that the buckle sets match the conchos. All of the ornamentation was made for me by Wage Silver in California. You will see these straps on the covers of Roy Rogers comic books. The original straps are in the Roy Rogers museum in Branson Missouri. The Bohlin method of construction has been used in the making of these straps, you will note the spur buttons are hidden from view. The carving on the straps is close to those on Roy’s straps. I made two sets of these straps , one I am keeping for me and the other you are looking at. These are a Larry Lasso interpretation of Roy’s spur straps

Roy Rogers Gun Belt and Holster Rig

This rig will sell for $950.00 to the right buyer -
Good Morning, Please find picture of the Roy Rogers Reproduction Gun Belt and Holster set I just finished. This rig took about 60 hours from start to finish. It is made from 8/9oz leather with 4/5oz leather lining. The belt is 3.5” wide and is set at 39” center it will go down to 37” and up to 41”. This rig is completely carved even under the billet straps and the holster flaps are also carved. I have attached a retention strap to this rig that is blind stitched. That means you do not see it from the front side of the belt. It also has two access entry points in the back of the belt that allow to change the buckle if you so desire.. These points allow the screws on the buckle to be sub- surface , so as not to mar the leather . There are hammer thongs on each holster. There are 36 bullet loops for 45 or 44 caliber bullets. The holsters are made for a Colt SAA 45, The toes of the holsters are open so any length barrel should work. Oil has been applied to the rig and two separate dies were applied. The finish is a satin sheen that allows for a moisture barrier. This rig is completely leather lined. The only thing you see when you look at the back is the thread and entry points to change the buckle. The ornamentation consists of nickel spots and a very special buckle set on the belt. The holster bands are laired between the top leather and lining so you do not see them from the back side. The hammer thongs were also configured in the same way. You will also notice that the buckle sets on the holsters match the buckle set on the gun belt

Thanks Mike, I do not know why some have the large size on the inside or outside. I perfer the large size on the outside as there is less damage to the large conchos from walking and the possibility of clicking the conchos together. As you know some sterling silver conchos are very expensive and it would be a pitty to damage them. ... Larry Thanks Ken, perhaps now that I am retired from my regular job I might just do that. Do you konw if you sell in Calgary if you would need a tax license ? Thanks for your nice words Don, I have sold my straps in Germany to a fellow and his wife that have a western store in Germany and in France. Thanks for the nice words...Larry

I have a question about the oil we put on leather and when and how we apply it. When I make a set of spur straps I do the following: 1. Oil the straps and wait about 24 hours and buff up )neetsfoot oil) 2. Apply block out to certain areas wait for it to dry up 3. Apply a 2ed coat of block out to the same areas wait to dry 4. Do my back ground dieing 5. Apply either highlighter or antique stain and wait it to dry and buff up 6. Apply either satin sheen or super sheen 7. Buff up and I am done.. This is what I do, but I don’t know it I am doing it in the right order or there is a better way to do it Any suggestions ??? Thanks Larry

llasso replied to ClayB's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I went through the same situation you did. I also hate to make a belt but I did for a relative. He wanted me to carve bass so I did. I will never make another one. I must say yours turned out better than mine. All I wanted to do is get it done. Very nice work.Larry -
Thanks for the nice comments, I really did not know how you guys would feel about these different kind of spur straps..Thanks Larry
