I am playing with writing paper and scotch tape to try to duplicate it.
There is a triangular base with tapering sides, but I have to keep fooling with it so it folds and covers everything. Maybe upside down capital T
Hmmm you got me going now!
There is a picture of a tote I made in my gallery with one piece side gussets and base, but it is not as elegant as the one you show
-
Packing tape on flesh side or glue it to cardboard
before embossing or tooling
-
It is a lovely bag in shape and manufacture.
I watched the video and to me it looks like the bag consists of only two pieces of leather. The side gussets are simple folds and internally sewn and the base looks like triangular shapes folded from each side piece and stitched down the center. I would think a thicker insert is placed into the base from inside for shape and support
It is hard to say and see exactly from the site though. I would fool around with some paper and see if you can duplicate the look with folds and make your own version.
Let me know how you make out

Great job doing this yourself, a fine project!
When I ordered some cabinet scrapers from Lie-Nielsen, they came in a fantastic, thick leather pouch.
It was one of the things that started my interest in leatherworking
Ohh I missed the link in your first sentence oops
My pouch is a bit darker and flatter, but that is it

Fantastic edges as well
Nice case!

Very cool image !!!

I don't roll my leather, I use a home made saw horse and lay the leather over it grain side up, I keep it as far away from my work bench as possible and that seems to keep it clean.
If anyone has an opinion on this let me know, thanks Stu...
I think this is a perfect way to store leather
How many horses so you use for each hide??
I would run out of room too fast in my smalll space
Excellent point of keeping it away from under or near your bench....dust,glue, dye spills etc could easily destroy a nice hide
Like to see a pic of you saw horses in action
Cheers,Scott

Awesome , thanks!!

They look great..... colors, images and lettering; all just sweet.
Can you give us a rundown on what you are doing, paint using, how getting such clean lettering etc
Like to pick your brain a bit

You do some beautiful work,my friend, just beautiful!
-
Nice stuff for sure
You are going to build a good reputation w your work buddies and become super busy with orders on your "days off"

Sure, this is their website, Philip is the owner and a very friendly Aussie. The shop is in a developing industrial area of East Vancouver
Just don't buy the skiving machine it's mine!!!!!
-
Ok JLS I have been thinking about this
Are you saying having a piping / round kind of thing glued on the outside or wrapped inside the back layer as it folds over.
I think you have a pretty good sense of why I am hesitant to start skiving that edge and just folding it over
-
He had a Fortuna leather skiving machine for sale as well......really tempting, but I have no room to put it in the garage shop right now.
In fact, we are planning either a big reno or an entire knock down and house re-build in the near future.
A new leather shop is high on my priorities list!
-
Ya, not really.
It will be all gifts and personal stuff
-
Ya JLS, I was all ready to drill out the clasp and re-rivet it to the back with copper rivets
I was going to destroy my old portfolio and re-use the clasp, but it has sentimental attachment to me and was made in Canada..of fake leather
The cheap binder solved the writing on a solid surface problem so I was going to keep it intact
Folding those long four edges are what prompted this thread, as well as the curses when trying to skive them perfectly with out wrecking any edge
You guys are full of great ideas!
I am going to take the kids swimming and ponder this in the pool....last two outdoor public pool days:)

Ooh, like a rare earth magnets to hold the clipboard in place???? Great idea!!!
Then I wouldn't have to glue it or stitch it down permanently and he could remove it when he wants
I have some Lee Valley earth magnets sitting on my shop desk
I was looking for a paper clasp like on the original, but could only find the cheap clasp from a dollar store folder
I could re-work the folder in wood or kydex too, but would want to find a better clasp
See, this is why I posted before plunging ahead
Fire away with more ideas to help the design challenged

I think I have totally lost it now, wife is gonna kill me!!
I have 5 bought hides of Horween leather this month Black, tan, brown, blue and chocolate. The leather is so nice to work with, great smell, cuts well and has a great feel to it. Have lots of supply for Christmas and birthday projects now.
I am stocking up as a small leather supplier in Vancouver BC has some now and is unsure of when he will get more. Since it is so hard to obtain I have basically bought one of every color I feel I will use regularly.
He threw in some dies for nada as they are downsizing their store...another reason I thought I should stock up in case they close down.

Hello all, would like some input on this project to get some other ideas before I plunge into assembly.
I am making a leather portfolio for my son.
He is left handed so I have modeled a design from a "pleather" portfolio that I used in University.
The writing pad is on the wrong side for him, so new design is for writing pad to sit on the left, clip above it, pocket on the right, fold down the middle and a leather tab and snap to close it. We want a plastic solid writing surface on the left.
I have cut out the 4 main leather pieces (back, sides x2, pocket) and am especially pondering how to :
1. Attach the plastic clip board to the left side so there is a solid writing surface or maybe have it slide in and out?
2. Do professional looking edges...idea was from the back folding to the inside? Skiving will be a B as I will have to do it all by hand, but oh well
The photos show the rough pieces cut out, I have a 3/4 inch seam allowance from the back for the edge fold over
I am open to any thoughts, as I have had great luck with other eyes giving me great new ideas.

photo 2: loose assembly 4 pieces
