  1. I agree completely. I'll not be using it again. For now, I solved the problem with vinegaroon. The holsters came out okay, but my hands were brown from it. Is that normal?.
  2. i tried to vinegaroon the edges and then fade in with black dye....fail...then vinegrooned the entire thing...its black but you can still see a gloss difference where i tried to fade in with the black dye...so, they will become knife sheaths and other small little pieces....back to cutting and awl punching,....grrr...henceforth, gum trag is a foul word in my house...
  3. Hey all...i ran into an interesting issue last night...i was making a few western rigs...nothing fancy, no tooling, and for some reason (probably becuase im new to thins and still wet behind the ears), i decided to edge the holsters before spraying with dye..now that i have sprayed it, it looks like i got some gum trag slopped around on the holster and the dyde will not take to it...it looks like poop..well, kind of red when it should be brown, but you get the idea...are these now scrap bin stuffers or is there a way to recover these holsters?
  4. Thanks for the replies guys....i think I'm gonna try option b first and hopefully it will come out okay....my main concern is the leather coming out stiff enough for good retention...
  5. Hey All...im starting to feel like a 6 year old..you know, you try to learn something and you hear all sorts of different opinions then eventually you think you have and proudly tell the teacher that William Tell discovered America after he escaped the African Penal Colony, and that if it weren't for Pocohontas he would have been eaten by the Pygmies on the Plains of Apache. So, I seriously need some guidance here guys. Here is kind of what I'm thinking... Option A: stitch and wet form holster, stick in oven on 170 (lowest mine goes) for about 10-12 minutes, let dry overnight. Dunk in Vinegaroon, then baking soda, then in clean water, re insert gun, and let dry again....(will redunking in all of these thing ruin my first molding?) Option B; Stitch and dunk in vinegaroon, backing soda, clean water, then wet form, bake and let dry.... How about edging...do i do the hard to reach places before I stitch?...and will vinegaroon color it after it has been edged with gum trag? Any help from you guys would be great...im bald and trying to find hair to pull out...
  6. Its a single 10...i was shopping for a single six last year and when i looked down in the display case, there was a single six that had a few hard years on it, and for a few dollars more, there was this brand spanking new single 10...last year was the first year they came out with them, so i figured I would grab it up and if they didnt catch on, then i would have a rare safe queen...im glad i got it, it is a tack driver...the other is a ruger redhawk with an absurdly long barrel...my buddy deer hunts with it and asked if i could make him something cool to hold it in, and in my estimation, a doulble loop rig is about as cool as they come..
  7. I really like that...not bad for a "scrap piece" of leather...i bet it was a chore sticking that though..what is it at the seam, 24 ounce?...i was gonna say you could space your sticking a little closer, but with the leather being that thick, i can see why it isn't 6 spi....good job!
  8. hey all, here are a few more...this is starting to become an addiction..let me know what you guys think...
  9. same thing happened to me..working plainclothes no less...i had to trap the gun in my armpit and keep it there for a little over an hour until i was alone and able to reholster it...never wore that holster again.....
  10. you need to sew, or put your snaps on the back before you sew the front on...i would do it the same way I would do stich lines for a gun, mark half the width of the mag on both sides, stich, wet and mold.. here are some observations however...i have had numerous magazine pouches like this in my 18 years as an LEO, every one of them has worn out rather quickly...a flap on the to of the backside is the most commom way ive seen to secure them to the belt (sewn or snapped)... im getting ready to make a a pancake style mag pouch...i think it might last longer...another option if you are wanting concealablity is to go with an inside the belt design...
  11. Now that is a novel idea...bravo for thinking outside the box!!!
  12. Thanks Particle...praise coming from you is indeed highly appreciated..i just watched a couple of your video's and am amazed with your work....the customer wanted this to be a simple range holster. Ive been an LEO for 18 years, so I figured, what makes a good range holster.., ease of draw and reholstering, easy on and off, all day comfort, and sex appeal...we all love flash, but clean lines and business built say so much more than rhinestones...the customer is also female, and it is her first custom holster, so ride height and cant was an isssue because she simple had no idea what would be comfortable...(this led to me wearing my pants low on my hip, walking about the house trying to figure it all out..so not a good look for me) ...so i cut the leather at the top of the cylinder and slightly flared it out, for spedy draws and reholstering...i spent alot of time in the trigger guard area, and before I dyded it, it would snap in...after dying it lost the snap, but still holds well enough when belted up...I need to get a pear shaped shading tool to really get the leather down in there...i tried to cut a stich groove on the inside of the reinforcement piece with my freehander, but i think all i accomplished was pressing a slight channel in the leather..my freehand groover is ground a little funky and not very sharp yet..still trying to figure that one out...I stiched the front seam and left the back open sort of hand pinched the leather all around to figure out the back stich line..then transfered that to my pattern (saw your tip on correcting your pattern) ..all in all, im pleased with it..i still need to be more careful with my tools..and I agree..revolvers are a bear to do other than the western rigs...next up is another avenger style for a glock...hopefully it will turn out better than my last one...thanks again for all the tips and tricks you post on here...it is greatly apriciated.. Don
  13. Hey all, Here is my fourth all leather holster. Ive made quite a few hybrid holsters, but just got started with all leather...the first was from the sticky posted on the Mexican double loop..it turned out great, but i dont have any finished pics...the second was Lobo's enhanced avenger, and well, it holds a glock...not very pretty, but it holds...the third was for a Taurus 85, and although it looks okay, the pancake design lacks good rentention..im not sure what went wrong...but here is the fourth...i think it turned out rather well, but then again, im still new to this, so what do you guys think???
  14. Hey all...im and old woodworker who is trying his hand leather. I got my shipment of leather in tonight and realized that i didn't get any dye. I called all the local stores and no one has any leather dye. I tried a bit of neats foot oil and that darkened it up a little, but not what i need. Anyway, i have some aniline dyes for woodworking..its transtint water soluble dyes...will this stuff work on leather or will it do something bad? thanks for any help all. Don
  15. I'm going to make one for a glock 32, sig 229, s&w j frame, and A little 22 Jennings...sort of playing with a few of mine to get everything worked out...thanks for the link...
  16. Hey all...as you can see this is my first post, although i have been doing alot of reading on here the last couple of days..anyway, im getting ready to actually start doing real leatherwork..i make hybrid holsters and well, lets face it, not much leatherwork there other than finishing the edges a bit...anyway....again...here is what prompted me to post...ive notice quite a few of these avenger style holsters here, and ive googled my but off looking for a pattern, but i cant seem to find one...does anyone have a tutorial here on how to make a pattern for this type of holster?...i saw Particles post on it but the video wont work for me...any help would be appreciated...hopefully ill have some pics in a few days when im finished with my ruger single 10 mexican loop holster... Don
