fast forward a few years........Does anyone have plans to make your own pack saddle? I have that book from highcountry horse but it has nothing about making the tree in it. I exchanged emails with the author and he suggested not making one, but rather buying one.....what's the fun in that?!?!?

where do you buy the cardboard stuff? Got any pics of what it looks like? Surely its not regular box type cardboard? That stuff wouldn't allow stamping well I would think

furthermore, how do you do it when it is cased "properly"? Does it affect the glue? What type of glue is best? I did get a piece of once without distorting it, but it had pieces of the back board still glued to it because it just skinned it off.

I have had problems in the past with my pieces distorting while stamping. I have heard of people gluing their stuff down to something to prevent the distortion so I tried it. The "board" I used was glorified cardboard - think clipboard type material. The issue I had was when I tried to pull it off it got distorted worse. SO, what kind of board should I use and what type of glue? And how do I get it off without stretching it all out? I have also heard of taping the backside too...... what are the different ways you all do it?

Question on the casing formula - Do you wet it first with plain water, or just spray it with the solution?

I have a chance to buy a ferdco 6/6 machine for $1k and need to know if its a good deal or not. I know nothing about machines. Also - where is a good place to buy colored chap leather?

Try again... Nope, my file is too big. I'll try again after I figure out how to change the file size. Dang iPhone

I made a few bronc halters for this association for free (minus the leather that was given to me.) They didn't want them to be real big either. I looked and looked on the internet for cool pictures and couldn't find much to copy. I should have looked here instead! I have a question about the carved letters that some of you do: is there a tiny little beveler that you use? I'm not a flower carver but perhaps someday I'll try it. What are some thoughts on how to tool around the letters? how come my picture didn't post?

I was wondering how you splice harness/latigo leather for extra long items. I ordered some 9' long roping reins one time and the saddle shop said they would have to splice them. How does that work, and what does it look like? Is it sewn? Glued?

I'm a newbie leather worker but not a newbie chap wearer. I bought some "chap leather" from Tandy awhile back that was 3/4 oz and it was so stinking thin that I was afraid it would tear just looking at it. I traded it in for 5/6 oz and that is much better. My question is why do Tandy and some of the others refer to this lightweight stuff as chap leather? How many of you have made chaps/chinks out of it and how does it hold up? I have seen bareback and bullriding chaps made from this thin stuff but they tore very easily. Maybe the "chaps" they talk about are not really meant to be used for anything? Maybe I'm nuts but I really don't think so!
