  1. Hey friends, I am trying to make a 45 degree beveled edge on a circular piece of leather that will be the bottom of a dice cup. I have tried to bevel by hand, scribing a line on the inside of the leather which is offset the thickness of the leather. Then I use the french edger tool to skive the leather from the scribed line to the bottom...but I get an uneven edge... Can anyone out there suggest a better way of doing this? I am thinking about trying to jig something up where I could use the sanding drum from a dremel tool or something to get a nicely beveled even 45 degree edge, but my mind goes blank... Any advice/expertise is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! =)))
  2. Wow!! Thank you, Dwight, and everyone for sharing your expertise and experience. Newbies like me need all the help we can get, and it is much appreciated!!! :DDD
  3. Hi friends, I am making a pocket knife sheath and am having a hard time trimming the excess edge without it tilting to one side (before grooving the channel for stitches... as a result, when I use the groover, one of the channels is higher than the other, resulting in me having to tilt the awl at an angle when poking the holes for stitching... I'm hoping that someone could share a method for getting the sheath edge flush without one edge being lower than the other.... Thank you!!!
  4. Thank you both for your answers!!! I'm new to leatherworking and I have so many questions....thanks again fellas
  5. Hi friends, I have been practicing tunnel stitching for the purpose of making dice cups, and eventually, some larger cylindrical cases. When you are tunnel stitching (where two flat ends of leather are sewn together), do you ALWAYS use a stitch groover? Is it absolutely necessary to protect the stitches? I noticed that when I use a stitch groover, then go through with the awl and pull the stitches tight, the leather on both sides of the seam looks scrunched up and weak (like the leather could easily tear). I am leaning toward not grooving a stitch channel, since the thread could always be replaced and fixed if the thread was ever compromised in any way. Stohlman recommends grooving a channel for the stitches to lay in... Any advice/experience that you could give is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!!!

  7. Hi everybody, I'm very new to leatherworking, and to this forum, and have a question about using the overstitch wheel... In Stohlman's handstitching book, when using the overstitch wheel, he recommends beginning by starting in the corner of the bottom channel, and wheeling across the bottom (please see attached picture with areas indicated in red)... My question is, how can you guarantee that the overstitch wheel will finish with a dot impression that is exactly in the opposite corner that you started from no matter what circumference of leather you are stitching together? Thank you all for your time and expertise
