  9. Thanks everyone! Smoke cigars, that tool gave me some trouble until figured the right angle to make a straight line. I got this tool online. Maybe you can get there easier.

  11. That book cover looks AWESOME!!!!!
  12. I think one of my most brilliant ideas about leather was to steal my sister's lab equipment! These pasteur pipettes are awsome for mixing dyes!

That's what I've always used, too. The disposable polyethylene ones have measurements marked on them, they're super cheap, and they last forever.

Any finish that's rubbed on (vs airbrush) will remove some dye. The best you can do is to vigorously buff any loose pigment before applying the finish and then apply your first thinned coat very gently to create a protective layer. From there, buff it again after that dries and then add a couple more coats of thinned finish.

Thank you all! I ll see what i can do....but i dont have an airbrush...sadly.

That's ok. Just do that gentle light coat after buffing and you should be fine. it will pick up some pigment, but not enough to ruin your project.

  16. I need to get a stitching horse if i want to keep all my fingers....

  17. Thank you!!! I hope i do reach this expectation!
  18. Thank you Cheryl! It really means a lot to me to get nice comments while i am so new at this. I did get some very good info about burnishing from a lot of people on here, and i am trying my best to apply it. I have to admit i aint doing so well though. As for the makers mark i think i will wait a little longer till i get more experience and stop messing up my projects. But i like your idea about my name! Take care!
  19. After the strong suggestion of a friend....i have to carve this project again.....&*#$%$#!!

Been there. Finished a $300 guitar strap and then messed up the final clear coat 2 days before I promised it would be ready for delivery. That was a stressful weekend, but I got it done. Can we see the original?

    2. Natalie O

      Natalie O

that does sound stressful. At least you got it done...as for me i cant even count the things that went wrong with this one....i ll upload some pics later.

ah, but each one is a learning experience :). If you don't want to show it to everyone, that's fine. But I'm always here to give you critique/advice if you want.

Thanks! I just HAD to go eat some cookies since I was already drinking coffee when I saw this post. Yummm....Good idea!

  21. Thanks! Yes i was a bit worried about the metal part scratching the camera. I ll just have to buy thinner leather then. I dont think mine would go through that small gap and my skiver is a nightmare. It would take hours to thin it down.
  22. It is 1mm thick at best. I ve heard though that when i ll dye the hide and the goat they will look different. Is that true? Thank you for the site! I am already checking it out and it has some good ideas! Thank you! Thats a nice tip....i am worried though about the strap being too thick like that.
  23. Hi everyone. My best friend graduated from art school and i wanted to make her a strap for her nikon camera as a present. I ve been looking on some of the nikon straps to get an idea of how to make it, but it seems i ll have to use the nylon ends, in order for it to get attached to the camera. All i have is tooling leather and some goats leather at the moment. How can i make this happen? I think that if i just sew the nylon ends to a piece of hide it will look bad. Any ideas? Has anyone done this before? Thanks
  24. Thanks...i did sand it and smoothed it and dyed it and then put tan kote on it. What else do you suggest? Thanks Bill! I did use a groover for the bottom part to fold better. As for the stamp it is a nice idea, however maybe i should find a more original one. I ve seen a lot of people use that stamp. Do you know anyone who can make me a custom made stamp? Also any ideas about burnishing the top?
  25. Hi everyone. I had done a case like this two days ago, and decided i didnt like it that much. So i went and did a new one. And for the first time ever, nothing went wrong! Here it is!
