This is a picture of an IWB that i made for a buddy of mine to try out this is the first one i have made. Any critiques would be appreciated.

I really appreciate the advice and information.

The price is $1850 plus shipping the warranty is only 12 months(parts and labor) compared to 24 for the artisan. As far as motor type i don't know. Is on type better than the other? Some of the other included items are xtra needles and bobbins, thread stand, bobbin winder. You are bringing up things that i need to know and learn about, thanks

Sold Some Belts!!!!!!!!
rsg3 replied to gunfighter48's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Makes you feel good, don't it. -
The price quoted was for the machine w/ motor(1/2 hp) and stand and accessories (i didn't get a complete list right now) . What i mostly meant by "comparable" was the machine sews about or the same thickness of leather and has the same length arm . I'd like to know if someone has one or uses one , how they sew and hold up over time. I really don't know much about sewing machines , I am wanting to purchase one in the near future and i'm trying to take a crash course here on them. Thanks for the advice.

Does anyone here have , use or know anything about these machines. I spoke with a gentlemen today that sells them and he said that they are comparable to the toro 3000 but the sewmo is around $150 less. Any info would be appreciated.

I appreciate the critiques. So far sight clearance has not been a problem. I was wondering if i should stitch around the belt slots, a few of them i have stitch around and some i have not. Anyways, thanks again

Your holster looks pretty dang good to me. Outstanding work. -
I have never used a stitiching horse before, just a cheap stitching pony (i guess you call it) that i made. My question is why is the clamp at an angle to the seat? I have a friend who is going to make one of these for me and wanted to know if he should build it with the clamp at an angle (as per the drawing) or if he could build it more perpindicular to the seat.

How does this linen thread hold up as far as exposure to the elements, the stuff i mainly have been sewing is holsters and belts, so it would have to hold up to wet, occasionally anyways? Thanks for the tip on the harness needles.

Hello folks, i need some advice on thread size or type for hand sewing. Lately i've been using single strand artificial sinew, which i like very well. The problem is the other type and colors of thread i use (which is describe in the catalog i get it from as "Professional saddle stitching thread" and "35 lb strength waxed nylon" ) seems to be too thick to sew with. Most of the time i have to use a set of needlenoses to pull the needles thru the holes, and i break and deform alot of needles doing this. I have drilled my holes in the leather with a 1/16" bit, lately i have used a diamond shaped awl, either way it is still a pain in the hind quarters. Can someone recommend a better thread or am i gonna have to stop being a sissy and use what i got?

Google "Farm Woodwork" and you should find a listing for a limited preview book, starting on page 98 i believe there are detailed drawings, directions and parts list for a stitching horse. There are also alot of other possible useful drawings, i was able to download the entire book for free.

I have seen a couple different people comment on his thread color. If my eyes don't decieve me it is a natural or sinew color, am i right ? I guess my point is that i have been using alot of natural color, artificial sinew lately and like the color contrast, at least with mahogany dye. I guess you guys don't like it as well. By the way does anyine know what artificial sinew is made of?

I had talked to these folks middle of last year, and they told me what you told me, that there were only two tanneries left in U.S. . When i spoke to these folks the other they said there were no tanneries left in the U.S.. I specifically asked about Herman Oaks leather and why you could still buy it and was told that they were probably just selling the inventory that was left. I don't know, i'm just a newbie here, the whole thing seems kind of odd to me. Thanks for the advice, by the way.

I Have a couple of questions. First, i was talking to the folks at Zack White leather the other day and they told me that there aren't any tanneries in business in the U.S. now. I guess my question is, if this is true, how can you get still get leather like Herman Oak ? I thought these guys were a tannery. My second question is, when buying leather would it be reasonable to ask the supplier for better quality leather. I bought some premium double shoulders the other day with the intention to make some belts and holsters out of them. When they arrived, they seem to be pretty good quality, but they had alot of stretch marks in them. The last double shoulder i got from these guys was practically flawless. I realize no two animals are the same, but is this something that i should just expect or is it reasonable to ask for something better within the grade of leather? Sorry if these questions are silly but i have limited experience buying leather.

Hey Grunt, thanks for the nice comments. Are you stationed at FT Bliss or just live in the area?

Jordan, thanks for the tip on the rivet dimple, i guess i can nip it off with a set of side cutters to make them a little shorter. The stitching never seems like it is quite good enough, especially on a belt. Seems like every inch or two i change my mind as to whether or not i like it. I guess it will get better in time. Beaverslayer, i don't quite follow you on the going to jail thing, i guess you are referring to the handguns. thanks everyone for the nice comments.

I'm trying to post some pix, i hope this works out. lsters_011.jpg]

thank you for your advice, it would be nice to have someone nearby that knows what they are doing, so i could look at their work and learn first hand. I learn better from seeing and doing than reading, unfortunately leatherworkers seem hard to find in my area. Thanks again

Hello folks, my question is, when hand stitching two pieces of leather together, i put a stitching groove on the front side of the piece but am i supposed to use a groove on the back side? I have done this in the past but have had problems keeping the holes on the back side in the groove. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello folks, I've recently began making holsters, tried to research this on this forum and have not been able to come up with any definite answers. My question or questions are, which type of finishes are suitable for holsters ? If i understand correctly holsters should remain stiff and maintain the form of the handgun. So, what finishes can or should i use to weatherproof, prevent the dye from bleeding out and also maintaining the leather over the years. Thanks for any help.
