Good evenind everyone, I am doing some research on the topic of medieval leatherworking, especially how they tanned and dyed the leather. I am in the process of making some scabbards for swords with historically accurate technique, and most visual sources indicate that they were colored, and archaeological evidences show that they are predomimantly wrapped in leather (though fabric covered ones are present). With my reenactment group we tried to dye leather using techniques and materials from fabric dyeing, with poor results. The only good result we achieved was black with vinegar and iron. I am asking mainly sources of any type, but with a preference for books and written sources. Also books from the 18th or 19th Century will do, I bet techniques haven't changed much...

Hi guys, my girlfriend asked me a carved belt, but since she doesn't want a complex one, I was looking for simple ways to decorate it. I found this interesting example: https://www.etsy.com/it/listing/84019596/hand-carved-amber-vine-handcrafted?ref=sr_gallery_18&ga_search_query=leather+belt+carved&ga_ship_to=IT&ga_page=2&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery I was wondering how it is tooled..it seems simply cut and beveled..isn't it? or is it a more complex work? Thanx a lot!! Daniele

Hi folks! I was wandering how I could cut leather to achieve a result like this http://www.outblush.com/women/fashion/jewelry/butterfly-leather-cuff-/ I read it can be done with the pyrograph, but I really don't know how... Do you have any ideas? Thanks a lot!

Hi Bob..! I would like to take advantage of your experience and knowledge asking you an advice...I am making a bag, with 3/4 oz cal leather, lined with cloth (don't know exactly which one...). I want to finish the edges, how can I achieve that? Is the procedure the same as with leather alone (as you described in your great tutorial) or not? Thanks in advance, Daniele

thanks for the answers..! I got my beveler with a basic kit including the swivel knife and some tools...it worked good for the first time, but now I need something better. can you tell me where ti find such tools?

I made an attempt...it turned out very well, with deep and clear carvings, but no darker effect... I'll try using Eco-Flo antique gel...(is it good? what do you think?)

Hi guys! I have a question, quite stupid I think, but I am a noob so please be patient =) I have some troubles when I have to bevel small details on my carvings. I have a Craftool B197 beveler, which is good for general usage, but not very comfortable for small details, and I di many works with small details. So the question is: are there smaller bevelers to do that? Any particular technique?? Or do I need more practice?? Thanks a lot!! Daniele

thanks for the answers!! Now I have only to understand how to apply properly the resistant and try...=) I have Eco-Flo super shene, is it ok? Do I have to apply it wuth a brush, sponge or other methods?

@Camano: What about oiling leather?? I found another picture of the effect I really would to achieve...http://www.klendasaddlery.com/images/design/100_0191.jpg do you think it's difficult? How can I do??

let us know when you got it! =)

Hi! I have a question for you experts: I saw lots of pics on the Internet of tooled leather pieces that became a little darker where tooled. I'll post an example: http://www.leathercraftstudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/2nd-comparison.jpeg on the lower picture you'll see what I mean...the carved leather being darker than its natural color. Does it depend on the quality/kind of leather, on casing it or what?? I think that's the way to acheve effects like the one on the first picture with finishers...isn't it? Thanks a lot!

Another Purse
3ntin replied to jayjay's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
where have you found red lace?? -
Hi to all! Ok, the title is not of the best, but I had no other words to explain my problem... That's simple: I would like to obtain decorations similar to the border on this purse: http://www.leofficinecreative.com/la_bottega_itinerante/img_cuoio/borse/borsa_cuoio_26.jpg and, generally speaking, how to achieve a similar result, with decorations lighter than leather's color, without using leather colors...is it possible? Thanks in advance!

in my country they say "he who seeks shall find", and I found what I was looking for =) I found this topic http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=42694&hl=wallet&st=15 with some interesting explanations and pics about doing pockets...!
-
I thought so...that's why I used 5-6 oz for my prototype's external part, because it can be tooled well...I'm not carving the interior parts (by now, maybe using an embossing wheel on borders)...thin leather is only to make more than 3-4 pockets without getting it too bulky..! Skiving may be a good solution... well, thanks a lot for your advice, but I'm really interested in learning how to make them... and I think, if I don't practice, I won't learn...
-
is it good for tooling leather? I usually use cowhide for tooling... do you have any pic of your works to see how it looks? Thanks!! ok, you have to explain me how you do them =) I searched a lot but I couldn't find anything about, and I am very curious =)

Hi guys! I want to make a carved leather wallet for my girlfriend. She is thinking about how she wants it, when I have the project done I'll post it here to ask you some questions. The basic idea is this: http://www.bagswish.com/476-handmade-leather-bag-high-quality-leather-wallet.html The first question is about the thickness of the leather. I want to carve the external part, so I think I'll use 2.5 mm natural cowhide, but what about the interior? I don't want it to be too thick, but I still don't know how much card slots my girlfriend wants... Generally speaking, which is the best leather to make wallet interiors, both for men and women?? Thanks in advance to all!! Daniele
-
that was not exactly what I wanted to know, but thanks for your answer my fault, I did not explain myself clearly I don't understand is how they work...do they have lining material in the interior? if you put cards in the higher slots, how can they stay outside the slit without sliding down?
-
Hi! How about slit holes? something like this ones http://www.mytrendyphone.it/images/iPhone-5-Iphoria-Fun-Book-Leather-Case-Black-01032013-3-p.jpg I really don't have any idea on how to make them...!

found this topic googoling a bit... http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=35975 it made me unsìderstand lots of things, but there is another question I found no answer: since I'm gonna using Angelus or other acrylic paint on a belt, will it crack with use or not? if so, is there a way to prevent it, or other ways to paint my belt?
