I need this info because I have to cover the flesh side (after I put it through my leather splitter) of a shoulder strap for a fly rod case that will be from time to time exposed to the elements. Normally I could use some wax but in warm temperature that could let marks on the clothes. Thanks Olaf

I always just assumed the gum would be water soluble after it was dry, and need to be sealed with acrylic lacquer like resolene when using it on the back of a belt to slick down the belt or on the edge. Then I spoke to some one and he said he had just assumed the oposite: that Gum Trag was a final finish for the edge or the back of a belt and he had never sealed it and never heard of it softening if it got wet again. So is gum trag on edge or the back good enough for out door use on its own? Also can gum trag seal a edge dyed with Fibiengs oil dye if used on bridle leather? Any thoughts?

I spoke the last days with a lot of cobblers about thread . A lot of them use even on bespoked shoemaking poly thread this days. But still they use there self made handwax also on poly like Chuck sad, because handwax locks the thread and/or hemp threads tightly. Olaf

Normally I would suspect that Sedgwick bridle butt would be weatherfast, but I must say the leather tube was more than 12 houers in the rain and was realy wet, may be this would happen with every dark leather and white thread after 12 houers in the rain. What would be a deep penetrating sealer? Will the leather still have this natural oily wax finish after the sealer? How is the lifespan of the poly thread compared to the flax sinew? Thanks Olaf

What would be the best white thread for hand sewing leather that will stay white even the leather got wet after some rain? I had a very bad experience with Barbours waxed pure flax sinew, after the leather ( Sedgwick Bridle Butt) got wet the brown color of the leather soaked on some places in to the white stitching. It looks quite ugly after all the work I had with this fly rod case.Thanks Olaf

The problem ist that you find the Barbour's unwaxed thread only in natural color. So if would like to have it black or other colors you must dye it. But what kind of dye do you use for it? Thanks
