Great work! So very detailed which I love. Just a quick question: is there a name for the kind of clasp you used? I'm trying to find one like it for a purse I'm making. Thanks!
  3. gorgeous! love the color.
  4. From the album: new experiments

this was painted with ecoflo professional water stain. ended up using a wee bit of white acrylic paint to get the skull detailing to stand out more and add highlights. sealed it in with a finish and am hoping the acrylic paint won't crack/peel/react with the finish. may make a hair barette out of this one... not sure.

love the look of simple unstained leather! had fun experiementing with the tools to make different textures on the wings. still have a way to go with my skills....
  6. From the album: new experiments

made this for a friend in exchange for some web design assistance. turned out quite nicely but the tools almost went through the thin leather i used. waiting for my first leather order to come in and have been working on tandy scraps for the time being- can't wait for my leather!

Experimented with antique gel. Got too impatient and didn't leave the rest on overnight- looks a bit muddy but i'm somehwat pleased with the results.
  8. Thanks for this excellent pattern! Very well executed. Look forward to making my first wallet!
  9. No problem! There's probably a lot of stuff on that site you don't need to know, but if your willing to weed through it it is truly a wealth of information.
  10. gorgeous!
  11. Beautiful! I love the stitching. How to do you achieve such a nice fade on the edges?
  12. The knife is handmade in both circumstances; whether crafted by a knife-smith or assembled by hand in a foreign factory (possibly by little children or other under paid laborers- hence the lower price!) The difference is choosing to support someone who has a personal investment in his/her craft and receiving a quality tool as a result rather than investing your money in something mass produced poorly. For example, I recently purchased a Tandy craftsman industrial knife set which had to be returned as it arrived bent and non-fuctioning- this poorly produced product either had a manufacturing defect, or couldn't even withstand the shipping from China to Canada. Regardless, the knife was returned and I decided to spend my money on something of higher quality instead, supporting a person and not a corporation. Quality of course is subjective, but it could be argued that a knife hand crafted by one of the more highly recommended knife-smiths is likely to arrive in one piece and if cared for properly, last a lifetime. In most cases I am happy to buy bargain price items but am aware that in some cases, price is a reflection of quality and one must be willing to make that sacrifice when purchasing.
  13. From the album: First Attempt Tooling

My first attempt at painting: next time I will use a much finer brush as it was very difficult to get into the smaller crevices! Used Tandy Eco Flo water-based Professional Dyes- got them on sale at tandy....seems to look alright but haven't used any other dyes. Phew. The fumes were quite strong for a supposedly environmentally friendly product- next time I'll open a window or work outside.

First project completed: Elk Patch finished, holes punched, edges roughly bevelled & burnished, and ready to sew onto backpack!

    working on purse pattern
  16. From the album: First Attempt Tooling

Another unfinished piece. Would like to stain the background a darker color to get some definition, leave the bunnies pale, and add some brown tones to the leaves... Like this piece and afraid of ruining it due to my lack of experience with leather dye!
  17. From the album: First Attempt Tooling

My second attempt at tooling. Haven't stained or finished this one yet... kind of like the ghostly raw appearance. Made this using the basic tools I got in an on-sale Tandy Basic Kit. I feel like I could benefit from the use of a stylus or smaller carving and stamping tools to get more detail.

From the album: First Attempt Tooling

This is my first attempt tooling and antique staining a piece. Got impatient and didn't let the resist stay on overnight but still relatively happy with the results! Probably will make this into a patch for a backpack. Couldn't cut through the leather very easily and have since purchased a head knife which I love to use!
  19. For the new leather workers out there: Just wanted to post a link that has been immensely helpful to me as a beginner. If you, like myself have already spent hours perusing the forums of leatherworker.net just trying to find a straightforward answer to your simple question such as : -which parts of the hide & weight of leather should I use for which project? -what's with all the terminology involving subdivisions of the hide? eg. double shoulder, single bend, side, double back etc -what are the basic tools and terminology & their function? -how to lace? visual and written instruction included etc. This website may help you out with many descriptions, definitions and super informative visual guides. Has become my beginner bible! www.kingsmerecrafts.com Hope you find it as useful as I have! Cheers (Not to discredit the immense amount of knowledge and useful information I have already acquired during my hours of browsing these forums-however many of those posting assume us newbies already know the basics!)
  20. Building my tool supply on a budget. Just purchased a Tandy head knife on sale for $35.00 (still planning on getting a nice Knipshield french style head knife but thought the Al Stohlman would do fine for the time being). Does anyone have any opinions as to whether the head knife can perform well as one of these skivers? or is it worth jumping on the sale? Thanks~
