  1. I have a couple sets of kangaroo reins and romel to repair and need a little advise. The part that attaches the bit to the reins, not sure what the technical name is, needs replaced. I have to make four of these. Not sure what the goig rate is for something like this. Any help in pricing would be appreciated.

  2. I'm not sure I really understand what is going on here so let me recap my thoughts. The original question was about the best coverage for the Mexican Round Braid. My thought, imho, is that the slits are going to get you better coverage because the lace is flat and will fit better. Kind of like the square peg in the round hole. the flat lace will look better in the slits than in the round holes. It will also not scuff if the slits are opened up a little.

As far as the strength of slits vs round holes, I'm not sure there is any difference.

  3. Mary Fields taught me to take the hide off the cow and just throw it out on the ground, flesh side up. Give it enough time to start to firm up and then cut it into a strap. I wonder if the salt helps to pull some moisture out and speeds up the process a little? One day I may have to try it when I get a good supply of rawhide built up. Would probably work better on a slaughtered hide than an old starving cow.

  4. It's time to start thinking about the show in Sheridan, WY again. I always have a great time there. This year I will be teaching workshops on cutting and beveling both rawhide and leather lace. Intermediate braiding, in which we will be doing a 7 part 6 bight turks head, that same turks head with the interweave and a Spanish ring knot. I will also be doing some personal training on Friday and Saturday.

The lace cutting class will also have Nick Carter helping teach and in both my classes, Brian Kidd, aka Knot Head, will be a guest teacher. I talked Brian into coming out to the show.

If anyone is interested in any of the workshops contact Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal at www.leathercraftersjournal.com or 1-888-289-6409.

  5. You can do either an over 1 under 1 or over 2 under 2 for a 10 or 12 flat braid. I think you can probably find how to start them on You Tube. If not, check books by Ron Edwards, Bruce Grant, R M Williams and David Morgan. If you need more info, just ask.

  6. Would someone plese post the process of making and using vinegaroon? How do you make it, do you diluye it with water before using, how long do you soak the rawhide and anything else I forgot to ask.

    Appreciate the help.

  7. in one of grants books there is a picture of a guy using a woodworking planer to split his rawhide....i always wondered how well that would work. they can be pricey but on the other hand they are highly adjustable and there are a variety of sizes. i currently use a homemade splitter from plans someone had posted on this board a couple of years ago.

In the Bruce Grant book, would that be Mary Fields who is shown making the reata? If so, she was my rawhide teacher and I have a splitter like the one shown that she is using. If interested, I can try to make up a set of plans and post them here.
