  1. Nick and Steve - Just a few comments for both of you if I may. The sheath looks great. Well designed with the nice scallop work to match the handle slab. I would dress up the keeper strap just a bit with more shape instead of just a 1/2" strap. I try to design sheaths to have the keeper away from the cutting edge. That's not always possible so you do the best you can. Following Steves thoughts on high or horizontal carry - The way this sheath is made is fine and would hang at a nice height in easy reach as it looks to be about a six or seven inch blade. As Steve mentions this doesn't work for him. The shape of the knife lends itself to a nice pouch sheath that would situate it higher or horizontal on a belt. Steve, You are exactly correct in working with the customer and the knife to accomodate both. I would like to know why you use the copper rivets and it looks like a snap as a retention device. Are you lining the sheath? Thanks, John D
  2. As far as doing miniatures I look at it this way, if I screw up theres not as big a piece of leather to throw away. LOL It is fun and they get lot's of attention at shows. Those are actually .22 shorts. I will try to dig up the order for the miniature pistols because I don't remember where I got them. Online someplace. John D
  3. Don't get me started Broomstick because I can get mighty windy. LOL I might just stick with inserting tid bits here and there as the situation pesents itself. I am darn sure not one of the Pioneers at all. Just happened to be related to someone with connections. I tagged along, learned, and practiced the things I was taught. John D
  4. Mr. Long, You are doing some fabulous work!!! For many years I have tried to help get the knife making and buying crowd aware of the need for quality sheaths. I tip my hat to you Sir. Outstanding!!!! John D
  5. Bill and I found that we had mutual friends from the past. One is considered the Father of Practical Pistol Shooting and the other designed and built holsters that have influenced all holster makers since. Y'all take care, John D
  6. Kayak and Broomstick, Thank you both for the kind comments. That is a Colt 1911 .45 ACP Semi Automatic Pistol. As Kayak mentioned it is designed to be carried Cocked and Locked. As the weapon is drawn from the holster and brought up to the firing position the thumb will press down on the safety lever and the pistol is ready to fire. It does take a bit of pressure to release the safety. The Browning Hi Power uses the same basic design. To those not familiar with these pistols it would appear very unsafe. Once you get used to them it is all second nature. Catch y'all later, John D
  7. Thanks Randy, It's not that important. I didn't want to offend anyone. I will follow up on that if I decide to try and post. John D
  8. Hey Bill, How's it going? Cooper and Bruce both would chastise the lot of you. Check the weapon before anything else. I just figured I would chime in and let you know that I joined this nice little groupand started posting today. I recognized your pictures before reading the post. Nice to see you in here. Catch ya later, John D
  9. Hello everyone. I guess this is where I should have started. I recently got turned on to this site and must say that it is great. I make Custom knives as well as do Custom Leatherwork. I enjoy Holster and Sheath work and have taught Sheath Making at Knife Shows around the country. I am not doing much knife work any more as the leather orders take up all of my time. I enjoy trying different projects. I hope to learn new techniques and if I can be of any help to anyone feel free to ask. http://www.thewildirishrose.com Thanks, John D
  10. Here's a couple of examples of sheaths I have done. Maybe I didn't read correctly but are you looking for sizes of fixed blade or folding knives? For fixed blades you might look up Randall Made Knives on the web. Their online catolog is fantastic and they give detailed discriptions of each knife. Since Randall knives have been around since the late 30's most of the sizes and shapes have been copied since. Maybe this helps a bit, I hope. John D
  11. Thank you all. Randy, I know you through the ######. Thanks for the welcome. Tracy, I basically copied the old Jack Ass now Galco shoulder holster. I always wanted one like Sonny Crocket wore in Miami Vice so I made one. The one pictured is the most recent. I have another picture and maybe someone can let me know if it's legal in here. It's not a sheath but a display board for a Bowie. I call It the Babe and Blade. The basis is the reclining nude backside from one of the old books. Anyway, if a picture of a naked female butt is legal then I'll post it.
  12. I hope I am doing this reply correctly. Thank you for the kind comments. No, not new to doing the work.
  13. Hello to everyone! I would like to jump in as this looks like the place to hang out. I was invited to join and thought I would share a couple of pictures as examples of my work. I make a few holsters and sheaths and am just learning my way around this site. Anyway, hello. And Semper Fi to all the Marines in here. John D
  14. Hello Everyone, I just recently joined your Group and must say how impressive it is. I do a little bit of leatherwork myself, so it looked like a fun bunch to hang out with when I am bored at work. These are a couple of "little" projects I did last year just for fun. For scale purposes the concho is 2". Anyway, I just wanted to say hello. Thank, John D
