  1. Thank you all for the helpful comments. I will definitely put them to good use as I continue practicing with more projects.
  2. Thank you. That's really helpful. I assume that applies the same for when it's folded over like mine, or when two pieces meet. If one piece is, say, 2mm and the other piece is 2mm, then mark the stitch at 4mm, correct?
  3. I've been making some basic card wallets of my own design. Please let me know what you think. I'd be happy to receive any critiques, tips, pointers, etc.
  4. Thank you. That is certainly a helpful supplier for future projects. However, as a beginner, I really don't want to invest that kind of money (upper $300 range it appears) until I've practiced enough to feel confident to use that high quality stuff from Maverick.
  5. Would any of you say that this is a good option for the inside pockets/lining to a wallet? http://www.leather-eshop.com/Calfskins-Natural-Greased-Leather-3rd-Grade.htm. I could ask them to split it to 2 oz, correct?
  6. That would be ideal if I had a splitter haha.
  7. Oh that's a great site. I know it's probably unlikely there are any, but do you know of any cheaper options?
  8. Oh, of course, I was not thinking correctly. I mean 2 oz. I think I was getting it confused with .08 mm, which is a different measurement. But I'm from central Texas area. I'll have to see if I have a bookbinder supplier near me. Thank you!
  9. I'm looking for 0.2 oz veg tanned leather. Tandy Leather does not really have 0.2 oz thickness, at least not any good selections. The best I can find is about 0.4 oz, which is far too thick for the inner pockets of a wallet (what I'm trying to make). Does anyone have any suggestions of where to look?
  10. I used a cheap sponge and applied (what I felt was a light coat) Satin Shene from tandy leather made by Eco Flo.

    Stamping

I'm looking at stamping a logo on my leather work, like wallets. However, I am uncertain of the order by which I should do this. Do I stamp the leather before I dye it, or after? If I stamp it after I dye, do I need to finish it before or after the stamp? It's a c clamp brass stamp. Thank you!
  12. These look amazing. I've been trying to make a wallet like this but can't seem to get the right leather. May I ask what oz size of leather you used to make these?
  13. Good to know. Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.
  14. Awesome, thanks a lot!! That really helps. Any suggestions on the design at all? Too short at the top, etc?
  15. you mean both sides of the edges? I haven't beveled anything yet. I actually don't know what it's suppose to look like to be honest.
  16. Oh I misunderstood. I really love the look of the saddle stitch haha. Thank you. So since I've already slicked my edges with gum, do you think it will be ok to bevel the edges still and then slick them back down with gum again?
  17. Thank you, kiwican. I actually have a couple of beveling tools. I know it may not look too much like it, but I burnished the edges, I just didn't dye the edges (probably would have looked better if I did). Would you recommend beveling the edges after it has been burnished already? And then maybe going back and burnishing it again after beveling? Also, I thought I did a saddle stitch haha. I probably messed up some where. Was this not a saddle stitch? Have any good video links for learning saddle stitching by chance? Thank you again. Blessings, Tyler
  18. I'm very new to leather working. This is my first simple card wallet. It's not great, so I'd love any tips and pointers on how to improve the design, quality, style, etc. Thanks. Blessings, Tyler
  19. Haha, I may have to end up doing just that. Doubt they will give me a refund. As a beginner, I'm sure I did something wrong. Either way, it helps to learn. Thank you for your help though!! Blessings, Tyler
  20. No, I bought it new from Tandy Leather. It's been about 7 hours now, and it's still sticky too haha. Maybe it's the way the satin shene is suppose to feel?
  21. OK, thank you. Yes, I tested the rubbing alcohol last night, and it actually seemed to get rid of some of he sticky feel. I then applied half water half satin shene to each piece again, and I've noticed it now has a bit of a sticky film on it again. I suppose I should let this sit for 8 hours at least. If it's still sticky after that, then I assume it might be the shene I'm using making it feel that way.
  22. Hi, I'm very new to leather working (just picked it up as a hobby), and I'm new to this forum. I'm currently working on a wallet, using vegetable tanned leather. I cut the pieces and dyed the leather black with an oil based dye from tandy leathers. After letting it sit over night, I then applied a satin shene finish to the pieces (also from tandy leather). The lady working at tandy leather told me to apply it and then take a cloth and rub the pieces after it drys. I did this, and noticed that the leather was quite sticky feeling. I read the instructions on the bottle and it said to clean up with soap water. So I did this and it was still sticky. I then did some research online and couldn't find much. It appears that I'm not suppose to rub the shene off but rather leave it on. I've applied several light coats, but it's still sticky. Is there anyway to fix this? Am I applying it incorrectly? Thank you!! Blessings, Tyler I should add that I have now been letting the shene sit on the leather overnight, and it is still quite sticky.
