No axe, this was made for a friend that throws, but I will be giving it to him tomorrow, so more pics to follow.

So I have only been at this about 6 months, but this is my first piece, that is my design and execution. I am pleased with the outcome. I am sure there are areas that I could improve upon, please give your input as it will only make me better. Thanks Dave Gill

Thank you to everyone that contributed to this thread. I am new to this and love it, I was trying to figure out how to make it a 100% go. EVERYONE'S points of view and insights have helped me to see what will need to be done to make it work.

Dye questions?
dtgilljr replied to dtgilljr's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Thank you for the responses. I went with the salesman's advice and I haven't been happy. Was going to change to the Fiebings on my next trip in. I want to produce quality projects and use quality products to do them. Thanks again for your responses. -
This may have already been asked and if so I apologize in advance. I was at my local Tandy shop and was talking to the salesman about dyes. I have read that Fiebings was a great dye to use, but the salesman said it was great if you want dried out cracked leather when your done. Is this a common occurrence or is it just his way of selling Tandy products. If it is a concern then what can you do to prevent it. Thanks Dave Gill the new guy

Belt Pouch, First Project
dtgilljr replied to dtgilljr's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items

So I haven't done any leather working since I was in the scouts about 30 years ago and I forgot how much I loved it. Well here is my first project, my brother and father are both use a black powder rifle for deer hunting. So I am using an old Celtic Pouch design that I found and am changing it up for my needs. The original pouch took, leather and laced the whole thing together, which while not looking bad, did not give me the look that I want. So I will be taking and hand stitching mine from the inside and then turning it right side out. The belt loops will be riveted in place and since the main pouch material is milled leather, about 6mm thick, I have some rigid pieces of leather to go on the inside of the pouch so the rivets will hold better. The button for closure will be deer antler that was given to me by my brother. I hope they enjoy this gift. The first set of pics I am posting is after the first hour or so of work, I am about to dye the leather now and let it dry. I will post more pics as I complete each step. Please feel free to give me any feedback, after all, this is my first project and I am sure there are plenty of you all that can teach me a thing or two.
