I usually figure 4x or 5x the length that I need to sew. I just downloaded your app. Looks like it'll make it really simple to figure out the length of thread.

This is a tape measure case I made a little over a year and a half ago. I used 10 - 11 oz. veg tan Hermann Oak leather and just left it the natural color but put a couple coats of neatsfoot oil on.

I looked around for a while and couldn't find a topic like this so I decided to start one. Do you have a leather item you have used for months or years that has a beautiful patina or pictures of used items that you have made? If you do I would love to see them and maybe even pictures of when the item was new. Above is a picture of two front pocket wallets I made. The top one I made recently so it might not be the same color as the bottom one was originally. The bottom one I made about a year and a half ago. Both are made with Herman Oak leather dyed with Fiebings walnut colored pro dyed with a resolene finish.

Finding leather by the sq ft and best places for hardware.
Dullguy replied to Triad86's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Hi there! I usually order my leather, rivets and snaps from Springfield Leather. You can get veg tan and oil tan by the sq. ft. and their shipping to northern Maine is about a week. It doesnt seem like they have a very good selection of solid brass hardware so you could check Buckle Guy out for that. Just my opinion... -

Oops, I just checked back on Springfield's website and realised I was comparing a craftsman grade shoulder with a B grade side so that would probably explain the price difference. Craftsman grade sides are only $.30 more a sq. ft. Thanks for your help!

I'm fairly new to leather work and have been ordering my leather through Springfield Leather. I can buy a veg. tan single shoulder for about $8.30 a sq. ft. or I can buy part of a side by the sq. ft. for $11.00. What are the benefits of ordering off a side vs. a single shoulder? I will be making pliers and tape measure cases with the thick leather and phone cases and wallets with the thinner leather.

That looks nice. What thickness of leather did you use?
