how thick of leather for a head stall?
Gilligan replied to yotebuster1200's topic in Saddle and Tack Accessory Items
I know a few people that will put decorations on the outer layer (i.e. studs, jewels, conchos) then sew them together to keep the metal from rubbing a raw spot on your horse. don't know of any other reasons for doubling. -
Thanks Ash. what does a side run from them? The Kid

A friend of a friend needs some split reins and headstalls built. As I'm just getting in to tack, what weight leather do I need? The Kid

Holsters and Sinew
Gilligan replied to Scott1952's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Rayban, it's killing me to know if that's a real picture or a digital overlay. not to be intrusive, but just wondering.. -
use a multi-prong chisel. you can draw a line with a pencil on the inside to keep yourself straight. then sew it up with a saddle stich

Holsters and Sinew
Gilligan replied to Scott1952's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
works well if not used under extreme tension. i'd suggest double stitching for anything that will be used regurarly. It will give a "native american" look according to some ppl. the picture is a sheath that i stiched together for one of my dad's knives. -
A guy from Louisianna once showed me to take glass jars and knock the lip of the lid on a hard surface (edge of driveway, brick wall...) it loosens up whatever's stuck and most lids'll come right off

Rather than hiring it out, what's to keep you from doing it yourself?

I have one each of ATX's and Horsehair's. The Speedy Stitcher has never worked smoothly, it gets the job done, but i do it much better with the other. They're really handy for carrying in place of several needles and thread. Both have a needle holder and contained spool. The wooden handle makes it easier than using a sailor's palm at times.

thanks. I'll go in and ask about it tomorrow. dont' recall seeing it before, but I'm not big into lacing jobs.

I noticed this belt on a guy I met yesterday and asked if it was hand made. He was amazed that I noticed. He told me that he'd really like to get another made, but had no idea as to where he'd get one. It was a belt that his father gave him years ago. He doesn't know if it was store bought or handmade, but I'm pretty sure it was handmade. this is the original colors this is the pattern further down the belt Ive just never seen anything like the silver lace on it. It appears to be coated, like a plastic base with a ?silver? Lining on it.

Demo guns for forming/molding
Gilligan replied to Dynamik1's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
If you need something molded, use the real gun, but oil it well and/or wrap it tightly in saran wrap. Just make sure that the saran wrap is smoothed down so you don't end up with bumps or wrinkles. -
McJeep, don't know of anyone that has done it, but discussed with a friend using rawhide for bottom of mocs one time. I'd put some soft liner on bottom to keep from wearing holes in feet, but I beleive they'd hold up pretty well.

New to the forum, not as new to leatherwork. Good friend of Calanneh. Mostly do Cowboy and Indian type projects, I'm also a member of an 1880s cowboy reenactment group.
