I was Piddling around in an old Junky trailer I Jokingly call The Shop and found a 2 pound engineers Hammer Bought from Harbor Freight . I wonder if I Glued A layer or two of scrap 9-10 Veg tan to the steel Head if that would be ok to use with Diamond Stitching Chisels ? I would be using a piece of scrap 9-10 Veg tan between the holster and either a plastic Kitchen cutting board or a piece of plywood. If the consensus is that would work ok then I will do that,if not I will buy either a Poly Hammer or a a Poly Maul.

Also Do you prefer for it to be the plastic/rubber type of head ? Looking to buy inexpensive

Thanks for all the information and the links. Thanks for the Information and the links. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain these things to me . I can see now that this can get confusing though as the width of the prongs can make a difference in the size of the hole and the spacing can vary depending whether it was measured from the center of the hole or the edge of the hole. (I THINK that is correct !) It is a little more complicated than the last holster I made ,I Made a Pancake holster for a Bersa Thunder 380 ACP and I used a Table fork (about 4 SPI)to mark the stitch holes then used a Finishing nail to open the holes and then sewed it with 346 thread using a single needle and a lazy man saddle stitch. Turned out pretty good ,DWIGHT ,A Super nice guy on this forum helped me from start to finish with back and forth Messages. He helped me tremendously with My Project. Thanks Again Craig

I looked at the Pictures of the Chisels and they did not appear to me to be shaped like a Diamond Chisel. I am merely try to find what I want. I am not a Troll ,just a 60 year old man trying to find exactly what I want. HOWEVER if you CHOOSE to consider Me a Troll and want to add me to your Ignore list then by all means do so. That is Merely your Your Mistaken Opinion and your Mistake and I Promise you that I will Lose no sleep over your Mistake.

It Looks like I will have to buy a Diamond Chisel made by the Chinese as It appears that regardless of what name is on the Chisels all of them are Made in China. I would rather support the U.S. economy than China's economy but I suppose that is Just the way it is. I would pay more for a US Made or almost any other Countries product than China . Swear shop labor, viruses and a known Propensity for Cruelty to animals and People. Please overlook my rant as I know this Forum is about Leather and Leather working. Thanks to EVERYONE that commented to my questions about Diamond Chisels .

I have never used stitching chisels to make a holster and would like to try them. I will be Making 3 Western style Crossdraw Holsters for my Colt SAA Pietta 45 Colt Clone, Remington 1858 New Army with 5 1/2 Barrel and another one like it but with an 8 inch barrel. Using 9 - 10 Ounce leather. Do I need to get a 1,2 3 or 4 prong ? I would also like them to be spaced at 5 stitches per inch. Where can I find a inexpensive Chisel /Chisels at 5 stitches per inch ? Any advice or pointers to using them ? Thanks

Great looking holster Slim,Trim with a minimum amount of Leather with a FBI cant. I wonder if this design would work well as a cross draw holster with a lot of cant without the retaining strap ? Curious whether the design with no support for the trigger Guard to rest on whether it would do the Job or maybe a Slim Jim type with at a bit of the guard resting on the leather might hold a Colt SAA clone with a 4 3/4 inch barrel ?

Hey Dwight ,doing alright? I have a Gen 4 Glock 21 that would work great with that holster ! I will send you a PM . For the Single action EMF(Pietta)GW II (Colt clone )45 Colt I am going to go with a More traditional style Cross draw with approximately the same cant as The Andrews holster ,maybe with an Inch or two drop from my belt to move the gun Butt lower and away from my gut for comfort, but I dont know how to lay out the pattern for that. I have a copy of Al Stohlmans how to Make holsters on my computer but I am getting confuzzled on how to get the Propper fold over of the belt Loop. I tried making a pattern out of paper last night but the loop when folded over is plenty wide (over 2.5 inches) at the top of the fold but taper at the bottom of the piece is not but a little over an inch wide . Suggestions ?

I have a EMF(Pietta)GWII 45 Colt with 4 3/4 inch barrel,(Colt Clone )I would like to make a Cross Draw for for it. I would like for it to have as much cant as possible(much like a so called driving holster or the Crossdraw holster that Chris Pratt wore on the Magnificent Seven ). I will be wearing it on my pants belt (A 1.5 inch BETTER GUN BELT http://www.abetterbeltusa.com/rough-rider/ ). I will be making it using a Piece of Herman Oak Pre cut . I want to make it using the leather folded over and sewed to make the belt loop as opposed to making a separate belt loop or using a Mexican loop. My questions are How big a piece of pre cut do I need to get ? I am thinking a piece 10inches by 10 inches will be enough ? What weight leather will be stiff enough ? This will not be used as a Competition holster but will be worn on a daily basis (mostly when driving to and from stores or when sitting in a recliner at the house(I am disabled). About how wide do I need to make the Belt Loop? Do I need to make it the same width as the body of the holster or ? Given the extreme cant of the holster, is it possible to have enough retention(given the non strenous activities I will be engaged in ) just by using a good wet molding or will I need to use a loop over the hammer ? Will I need to used a full length welt or just around the trigger guard? I am planning on leaving at about half the guard exposed. Any patterns for a holster like I am talking about ? Any tips and help much appreciated. Thanks bcraig

Polyester versus Nylon thread ?
bcraig replied to bcraig's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks to all, trying to learn as much as I can -
Are there any preferences to using a Polyester Versus a Nylon thread for stitching a holster ,durability, ease of use ,stitch appearance ? I am liking the appearance of the larger thread from what I have seen and am wanting to use a Round thread #346 or larger . Will be using 5 SPI and a Osborne AWL to Hand stitch with 7-8 ounce Veg Tan Leather.

Will it mash a groove deep enough for the stitching to be recessed ? -

Does the wing divider cut the leather? Is it easier to make curves with ? -

I really like that Creaser,if it will create a a groove for the stitches and not cut the leather that sounds good. -
I went to ebay and looked at some John James harness Needles size 2 -002 and looked at the 1,2,and 3 and they all give the same dimensions. Are they all the same ? And what is the largest diameter waxed linen thread that can be threaded through the eye of the # 2 needle? Where can I get a decent and inexpensive overstitch wheel,do you prefer a fixed size or interchangeable wheels ? Same thing for a groover ? Thanks
