Whats a decent japanese edge beveler and french skiver?
ToddW replied to ToddW's topic in Leather Tools
I definitely don't disagree.. I do follow his videos and love his work. His photography is also great.. Would love to support him this way, but I need to maximize my budget right now.. Spending quite a bit on tools and machines right now and really need to make every dollar count. -

Does anyone have a good Recipe and source for ingredients for a leather balm? Smiths put their ingredients on their website of: 100% organic cocoa butter, 100% organic beeswax, 100% pure sweet almond oil. I assume thats a pretty good formula but doesn't state ratios. Also looking for a good source for the ingredients.. I can find the tins on Amazon pretty cheap but has hoping for a better source on the ingredients. Todd

I am looking for a decent Japanese edge beveler and French Skiver without breaking the bank.. Lots of Chinese stuff out there and would prefer not rebuying later but also didn't want to spend a fortune. Looking for a good balanced brand on price and quality. Todd

this is kinda what gave me the idea.. For grinders, polishers, saws etc.. I saw a guy mount one of these on his bench and each tool had one of these mounted under it.. Allowing him to pull each device out and move it instead of taking up a bench.. Won't work here, but let me to the question. Anyway..Thanks for the response!

I agree.. just trying to put off building a shop as long as I can. I am in a spare bedroom that worked when doing sewing and cutting by hand. Moving to a sewing machine, bell skiver, splitter and a laser, I quickly ran out of space and have started to take over our guest bedroom which my wife absolutely gives me grief about. I have a pretty large photo/light booth I think I am going to have to re-engineer to have it where I can take it down and put it up. I has a table top with light defusing material all around it. I think that is going to be my first move.

I am looking at sewing machine, bell skiver, leather splitter.. Looks like all use a table with a servo motor. Is it possible..or has anyone.. built a table that lets you interexchange semi quickly machines. I think they all are different sizes and not sure if motor is on different sides, but looking for a way to better manage space. I could put the bell skiver and splitter on a shelf and mount it when needed. Crazy thought or doable?

Professional wallet making tutorial (book)

$150 is abit steep for me.. Would love the book, but now sure I get pull the trigger on it.. -
did you make it or buy it? I am wanting to make one for myself.. Just don't have one to take apart. I bought those square magnets at Tandy the other day, but I like the strength of the metal ones.. just trying to visualize how to cover it and make it look right. Going with the suggestions above.. Hopefully, it won't come out a mess and waste some leather..
-
so, the only exposed or visible metal would be on the inside curve part?
-
I am wanting a leather covered money clip.. are they typically done with square magnets or is there a way cover cover a metal clip. This is the look I was looking for.. is there a way to cover one of these? or use these those square magnets..

really struggling with which sewing machine

Would you recommend EPS for someone buying their first sewing machine. Two schools of thought there.. no bad habits yet or not experienced enough yet.. -
really struggling with which sewing machine
ToddW replied to ToddW's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
That one tickled a question which I thought I did not think I need EPS but curious as you asking about it. When I was looking at the the various machines, I was told" "If you do not know what the EPS motor is it will probably be overkill… it is a motor designed for factory style working… it puts the needle back in the same spot every time it stops… which could be time saving but could also make you hate it…. It is a GREAT motor…BUT do not put something real expensive under it automatically, it has some getting use to it…. It puts the needle back in the same spot every time so if you do not take your foot off at the right time it will go ahead and make that stitch, and leather is not very forgiving… so you will have a hole in a project you did not want… so just train yourself… or get the regular servo…" That had me at a pass unless I am missing something.. -

Maybe take this class from a guy that has a business and offers class and access to him to ask questions. He help you price your products and talks about low volume production. Less than $100 and seems to answer your questions.. https://www.stockandbarrelco.com/pages/start-selling-your-leatherwork -
Has anyone done a KickStarter for their Leather work?

I do bags as well but really struggle with the machine being so big I can't put it anywhere. My leather room is upstairs and my garage is a 2 car with 2 cars in it. Budge aside, I would LOVE your machine. I am going to have to rely on the front feeding and width of the cutting area.. -

nice that is a big boy and definitely out of my budget.. Do you really need 150w? I am looking at this one: https://omtechlaser.com/collections/mid-range-co2-laser-engravers/products/60w-co2-laser-engraver-cutter-usb-6b57-us?fbclid=IwAR21Hwxt53bbD-4a9YQLqflwTwHgLTYTMFOaRRzN8eKcAg_V0CzaGiLlENM -

cool.. I do wallets, journals but also do bags.. the cobra class 26 seemed pretty good with the optional table bed for that.. I am also wanting to make a shotgun case like the one attached.. playing around with design now but like the prominent stitching. The runs on that are pretty long. .. -
