You're right, JLS. Most leather workers are bright enough to keep backgrounding to a minimum. Skeet -

The original was made by J. R. Collins in the 1880s for Teddy Roosevelt who ranched in the Badlands. It is now in the Autry Museum. I have more work here:

Great work, Henrik... -
I'm delighted to have it critiqued. The more the merrier..... I would be happy to have it moved to the relevant section.

Thanks, Twin Oaks, for those perceptive comments. Yes, it's true I didn't use the usual serpentine technique. The Sheridan Style can look a little mechanical. I wanted it to be a little more free form. But that is a tough thing to get right....

Thanks, pards.

Yes, it's my pattern. I was trying to think of new motifs. I looked out at my back garden and there was a holly bush. So I thought I'd include a couple of leaves.....

I've been asked to make a pair of sandals as accurately as possible of the type worn in Rome. Can anyone point me in the right direction - a pattern, a book that details authentic styles (not fancy dress stuff), or anything else that might help? If there is a better place to post this, please let me know.

Guys, I've never braided before. I'm making a pair of shotgun chaps which - as I see in oldtime photos - often had leather buttons that have a braided look. Can anyone advise me on how to go about making a pair, or point me to the relevant thread? Thanks in advance. Brushpopper

Esantoro - the make I use is Platignum. But the Wickes sounds fine if you can get it. -
PVA glue
Brushpopper replied to Hilly's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
I apply a thin coat of multi-purpose PVA to holsters and let it dry. Then I apply a second coat and clamp together. It glues quickly and solidly. Now I've got the hang of PVA I prefer it to other types of glue.
