  1. I'm looking for help with this, as I'm starting at ground level. I have no idea how any dyes will work with the orange bottle stuff. Thank you! I can point and click my way to bankruptcy on amazon and eBay, but I never would have thought of something like that search in Google. I take it that structuring a search request like that would work for other sites?
  2. I would like to dye some home tanned deer hide. It was made with orange bottle stuff. Are there any threads on here about how to do it? Thanks
  3. I'm still new to this, so any information I pick up adds to my knowledge base. Funny how life is like that, a working man will often be better at something than a person with a lot of letters after their name. So if the BT can be "reversed", so to speak, is the same true of an egg or soap and oil tan? I was actually wondering about this as I was working a hide the other day. Oy, that hide drying, too much like running, it gives you too much time to think while you're getting your exercise for the week. I used the soap/ neet's foot oil mixture on it so that I can try my hand at smoking a hide. thanks again for your answer.
  4. What is it about chemical tanning,i.e., orange bottle stuff, that inhibits the smoking process?
  5. I am making a blanket with deer hide I've tanned out. Other than smoking it, what can I use to seal it, if that's the right word? I would like the leather to be at least hand washable. My reason for not wanting to smoke the hides is the after smell. Thanks.
  6. Have you thought about using one piece of metal rod to make three sides so the bag doesn't collapse on itself when you set it down? Make a form to bend the metal around so it's not crooked and then sew it all in.
  7. What are the basic tools I need to get started with leather cutting? I am right now only doing straight line simple stuff on the chinese shoe patcher sewing machine I have. Xacto knife and rotary cutter? Scissors? Self-healing mat? Band-aids? Thanks
  8. Thanks for the explanation. I'll just use the hides for leather, that's all. A pair of gloves and a shop apron are on the list, also, so the hides will get used up as I go along.
  9. I did not know that deer hair did that! I appreciate you pointing that out to me, though. Does this happen simply because the hair is weak due to being hollow?
  10. A bucket list project is to make a blanket out of deer hides that I've worked from green skins to finished product. How much difference is there between sewing a hair on deer hide vs. a piece of leather made from deer skin? My plan is to use a strip of leather to edge join the pieces together wherever there's an edge, whether it's horizontal or vertical. Nice to know stuff to help with any answers: All my deer hide stuff so far has been tanned with orange bottle tanning agent. Recommendations for a better tanning agent? I have a Chinese leather Shoe patcher sewing machine Thanks for any input.
  11. I am a long ways away from being able to do something like that. Did you hand draw the pattern? Is there a way to get the acorns more round vs. pointed? That said, I like it, it's unique.
  12. Ash is a very versatile wood, sometimes referred to as the poor man's oak. A lot of it was used for furniture during the Depression. Yeah, that's nothing to worry about at all, just character marks for that particular piece of wood.
  13. I am looking for help with finding site(s) that deal with home tanning of leather products. I am new to both tanning and leather work in general. Like way too much else on the internet, trying to wade through all of those search results is mind numbing at best. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Please feel free to move this question to the right section if it's been misplaced. Thanks Ray
