Hi, I have a Jack H2 not an ideal machine but i was recommended it and I'm still not entirely sure. Anyway I'm trying to sew biothane for dog leads and I've had many issues so far but by looking at old threads I've managed to sort these out. I am using a size 24 needle and tex 135 bonded nylon both top and bobbin. I am using the larger needle size as i couldnt get the knot to sit in the middle of the biothane and that has fixed it. My current problem is when I try sew 3 layers the top thread will cut into the biothane material but the bottom i can generally get a decent stitch. I have tried adjusting the tenssion in various ways assuming I'd have to loosen up and it does improve slightly but then i start getting loose thread at the bottom. Would someone be able to advise me how I can fix the thread cutting into the material? and perhaps get a nice consistent stitching on both sides? The pictures: The black piece is probably the best I can get it fit both sides - mind my messy work (still trying to get the hang of it) The blue material is me trying to play around with tensions and obviously not getting anywhere but you can clearly see the thread burying into the material. Thanks!

This is my first post. Thanks for a having this great forum. I just installed a Cobra Class 4 (factory setup with #277 nylon). Great machine Steve! It sews thick leather like nobodies business. Problem is, I need to sew mostly BioThane with #138 braided nylon thread since I'm making endurance horse tack. I filled a bobbin and tried a test piece with the factory tension. The tension was so high the top thread puckered a lot and sometimes cut right through the urethane coating. So I started backing off the tension. This turned into quite the exercise. The bobbin tension was a big part of the problem. The factory setting seemed to be about 8 ounces on the bobbin and I have backed it down to 6.5 ounces. I may go down even further since this is starting to give me good results. I also removed ALL the the top tension and gradually dialed it in until I had a lock stitch centered in the work piece. I'm doing my test trials with a black bobbin thread and white top thread so I can see what's going on. It is feeding well and I am getting a very tight stitch but it isn't puckering or cutting through anymore. It improved again when I switched out the #24 sharp needle for a #25 diamond point. I thought the #24 would be plenty big enough...live and learn. Does anyone else have expereince or tips for working biothane on this machine? Threads? Needles?

Hello - New To Leather Work. Need Machine Recommendation.
Esoteric posted a topic in Getting Started
I am starting to make dog collars and leashes and would like a recommendation on a sewing machine that could help me accomplish this task without going broke purchasing one. I will be working with leather, mil spec nylon webbing, seat belt material, and biothane. I would like to be able to do 2 ply leather, 2 to 4 ply nylon webbing, and 4 ply seat belt collars. I would need a machine that could handle this and not need constant repair in doing so. I would also need to be able to stich along edges with ease. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Hey All! Have been scanning this page for months now and finally decided it was time to join and be able to ask some questions frpm all the experienced craftsmen on this site rather than just searching for answers- so heres my question : I've got a Mini tack business just up and coming, and I work primarily with Biothane/Betathane. I've been hand sewing all my projects with an awl, but my hands and shoulders are saying it's time for a machine! The problem I'm having is trying to figure out WHAT kind of machine I need, nothing fancy for now, just one that'll do the job, and not give out on me 3 months down the road! Some day when I have learned more and want to move into heavier leather equipment, I'll be on the hunt for a suitable leather machine, but for now it's fairly lightweight- 1-3 layers. I have searched our local classifieds, and found an older model Singer Walking foot Industrial machine, but will this do it? Thanks for any advice!
