Hi all, I have lung issues and am concerned about working with chrome tanned leather. I know that it can be made so that it is safe to use but I don’t know who offers it for sale that way. I imagine US manufacturing would be the best way to go but how do you know? I know US manufactures would be the safest for the environment too.I don’t even know if there is any chrome tan made in the USA. I am interested in mostly pull up types and some upholstery types. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to purchase and how to identify when buying on line. I don’t typically see where it is made in the add to cart page. I plan on being at the 2022 Sheridan show and will be looking. Thanks in advance, and if this has already been talked about please direct me.

Hello all, I have been doing leather work for a few years now and I do it out of my apartment. I have tried many different adhesives on my work and ended up preferring barge glue over them all. I do large amounts of glueing, as I glue liners on all my work. The trouble is that barge glue stinks up the entire apartment even when doing it next to an open window and forces my wife and son to breathe the toxic fumes as well. I have considered buying a respirator, which would protect me but not my family, so that's out. I have also considered a vent hose the sucks the fumes through a window to the outside, which seems like the best option. My concern is that barge is flammable. From the reading I have done, it has been recommended that 'spark resistant' or 'explosion proof' fans be used when venting flammable vapors... But they cost and arm and a leg! I don't have that kind of money to spend but need a vent solution for the glues and dyes I use. If anyone has suggestions I'm all ears! Thank you for reading and God bless! -Dave- -
Hi guys! Regarding using acrylic top coat for coating parts of my leather bag, would there be a safety issue? Im using Zelikovitz Acrylic Top Coat in Satin finish. It clearly says Toxic on the warning label. I understand this could mean the fumes while applying it as it does have a strong smell. I have a toddler around and I am concerned of heavy metal exposure because of the coating in some parts of the bag. With regards to it being on some parts in the bag that I routinely touch, would there be a safety issue with skin absorption with the dried up acrylic coat on the leather? thank you! -

Hello, I have a dilemma. I am looking for a good brown to dark brown dye. I used fiebings pro oil dyes in the past with good results, but I do not like how toxic they are, and won't be using them. I looked into Tandy's Eco-Flo dyes, and in doing research, I found a leatherworker.net thread with a bunch of people talking about how they had ruined projects by the dye turning a greenish color, and I don't want to chance that. I actually spent a lot of time and effort brewing a batch of black walnut dye a few weeks ago, and I am not at all happy with the results. It takes WAY too many applications to get to dark brown, and WAY too much time (oiling, then waiting for it to dry, applying the dye, and waiting for it to dry, repeat). I have tried multiple ways of dying the leather with the black walnut dye, only to get disappointing results. Long story short, I would like a brown/dark brown low VOC leather dye that is not fiebings pro oil dye, or tandy Eco-Flo. Any suggestions? Thanks! Zayne -
Hi, First of all I should say that I'm not a leather worker, and I've never worked with leather or anything similar. But this seems like a good place that may be able to answer my questions. I work in an office above a cobbler / key cutter in the UK. 2 or 3 times per day our office if filled with a very strong chemical / glue type smell. Which appears to be coming up through the floor boards. The last few works days it's been constant all day, and makes me very queasy. Our guess is it's the leather glue. We've written to the chains head office but they haven't replied. If knowing which UK chain it is helps I'll let you know. So my questions are, is this stuff safe to breathe in? Is the queasy feeling just because I don't like the smell, or is it something more dangerous? And also will I turn into one of these newspaper stories in 20 years time dying from lung disease / cancer? I know I haven't given much information to go on, and I may well be over paranoid, but thought you guys might have some insight. Thanks,
