Single Loop Splice on Single Layer Leather

Recommended Posts

I've looked high and low and can't find a procedure for splicing single loop edge braid on a single layer of leather.

There's lots of stuff about splicing on two layers where you bring the tail up between the layers, but I can't find anything about splicing on a single layer strap.

Does anyone have directions for doing this?

On a single piece of leather you’ll tuck tuck the ends in on the sides.

splicing

To add an additional length of lace, do a wet splice, skive the ends to be joined, glue them together.  Takes a little practice to make it appear to be a continuous piece of lace.

@knothead, I see that for beginning and ending, but what about in the middle of the project?

@northmount, thank you. I was hoping there was a method to splice without the wet splice. Any thoughts?

@northmount, also: How much of the lace do you skive on each side for a proper wet splice? 1/4"?

If the leather is thick enough, you can split the leather so you have 2 layers and hide the ends inside.  Again, you will need lots of practice to make this work.

I try to get towards 1" of overlap.  I don't think 1/4" provides enough surface to  make a good strong splice.
