OSOK Report post Posted January 14, 2009 I am BRAND NEW at leather work...by that I mean I have made 1 very simple knife sheath so far. My question is, can I use something like a badge or medal for a stamp? As an example, could I use my old Air Assault pin as a stamp? I think I would have to epoxy or solder it to a heavy piece of steel, but how well will the leather take the stamp from such fine detail?
tashabear Report post Posted January 14, 2009 If you case the leather well, you might be pleasantly surprised. But don't use your hard-earned wings; buy some from Ranger Joe's or something.
OSOK Report post Posted January 14, 2009 Thanks. Oh, I wasn't going to use the originals, that's for sure!
CitizenKate Report post Posted January 14, 2009 You'd be amazed at some of the things that can make an interesting impression on a piece of well-cased veg-tan. Leaves can be pressed into the leather with a rolling pin. A few other things I can think of... metal buttons, wood siding, any kind of textured stone or even concrete... embossing dyes made for scrapbooking... nuts 'n bolts... just take your imagination to the local hobby store, or even a hardware store, and see what else turnes up. I think I read on the forum somewhere that somebody used a piece of a diffuser from a fluorescent light fixture. The back side is pretty bumpy and pointy. I haven't tried it but I bet the pattern could look pretty cool.... almost pebbly
