i have an workhorse Consew 255 that i cannot figure out how to adjust the presser foot pressure...i found some diagrams that show a screw, down in a hole, at the top of the machine but it doesn't do anything except turn, it has no effect on the foot pressure....

i can't sew vinyl, the presser foot indents it because of the heavy pressure

Does your machine have a long pressure spring running along the back of the head? If so, the pressure screw is near the center-rear of the head, not the left front. The screw would press down on the long spring. Back it off.

What Wiz said. To illustrate, find spring #16 on rear of machine. Screw #18 presses down on the spring, so loosen screw from top of machine. It's a small hole so you'll need a narrow slotted screwdriver.
