Eggplant Report post Posted June 26, 2023 I've been using veg tan leather which is c. 5-5.5mm thick, and have been happy with Clayton- Spire Leather for the last 10 years. Very sadly, they went bust a while ago, and I am still looking for a replacement supplier I have samples from Thomas Ware (Perfect, but a little thinner than I wanted) and FJF Baker. Again, beautiful, but this is much harder than I need: as its for its sound quality - so needs to be soft. Any other recommendations of tanners to try? Ideally in the UK, but am open to other ideas if I can't source anything here. Thank you!
YinTx Report post Posted June 26, 2023 I have some tooling veg tan shoulder leather from Sedgwick that is fairly flexible, and I can't wait to try it on a project. The sample tooling I did on it came out very nice. You might see if they are still making it and get a sample. Mine is fairly heavy, I think 9 oz or so I think (3.5 mm?). I don't know if they have heavier.
Alsopp Report post Posted June 28, 2023 Finding a suitable replacement can be challenging, but here are a few other tanners you can consider: 1. J&FJ Baker & Co Ltd. for example. 2. Bakers Oak Bark Tanned Leather - Bakers is a well-known tannery in the UK, and they specialize in oak bark tanned leather. They offer a range of leather types, including bridle leather, which is known for its softness and strength. 3. Tusting & Burnett - Tusting & Burnett is another UK-based tannery that produces high-quality leather.
