mrpndev Report post Posted October 16, 2023 I wanted to gain an insight from experts, and stumbled upon this forum. I purchased a sofa which uses full-grain Italian leather from Maharam. It's semi-aniline dyed that's 1.4-1.6mm thick and the hides average 50sq ft in sizes at least. I noticed throughout the sofa, there are a few natural markings. I'm just curious if this is something that's acceptable. The leather in question retails for $17sqft, and the sofa itself was $10k all said and done. I know leather is natural and has natural markings, but I'm just curious if this would be commensurate of the high price I paid. Thank you in advance! Handstitched Report post Posted October 17, 2023 While I'm no expert on upholstery leather , all leather come with marks etc. Unless the company that makes lounge suites etc removes or works around the marks, it would be difficult not to notice a few. I know this is a totally different leather, but when I make belts and other items, I keep the branding marks in. As one poster said:" 1. it was unique, and 2. only real leather would have it." I brought up this topic on a thread: The general consensus is, keep them in. HS
Klara Report post Posted October 17, 2023 The marks are the "disadvantage" of full-grain leather, which is not treated to remove them. So I'd say, enjoy them, they prove you have the real thing. (The plastic-coated split leather I bought by mistake and have been using for doggy things has no marks at all.)
chiefjason Report post Posted October 17, 2023 Those are range scars. Cows live in fields. Field have trees, briars, other cows, and barbed wire fences. Cows get scars like we do. Used to deliver mid to high end furniture. I've seen scars, fat wrinkles, bug bites, and brands. And no joke, if you WANT a brand it will cost you extra. I'm sitting on a Randall Allen leather chair. It had marks 20 years ago and it's got more now. Same with the Bradington and Young recliner. If either were perfect I'd have more questions.
