Glue wiki?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I almost only use water-based glue, because I always stitch, but whenever I need something stronger, I'll get some neoprene that I'll use every once or twice before it dries out.

So I was wondering if there is some sort of glue wiki for leathercraft, where one would find information per type of glue such as ;

  • how long should one let them dry before assembling
  • how long do they take to fully dry once assembled
  • how they behave went the item is soaked in water
  • will they hold well if the glued part is to be fold
  • are they suitable for gluing lining even if all edges are not to be swen
  • what kind of residue can be expected and does it go away easily with crepe rubber
  • how much of a mess they are to use
  • how long will they hold on your shelf
  • Potential toxicity
  • Main brands for each type
  • etc...

I'm probably dreaming but if there's a website or a thread that comes close to it, I'd be more than happy to take a look!

Cheers,

Experience and Google. You will get the answers to all your questions there.

Come to think of it, your questions are so in depth. When you find the answers, why don't you share your research here so that the next person will have somewhere to refer?

Why don't WE do it?  and get it set as a 'sticky' as another resource of info

Info off the tins and our practical experience

Start a new thread maybe and address the questions asked?

PS, @Ornyal Get some Evo-stik adhesive cleaning fluid, It acts as thinner on neoprene glues. If the glue has not dried out too much it will bring it back to usefulness

Thank you for your answers, I do indeed look for information on google, but the thing is you can find contradictory info, and it's not alway "leatherwork focused", plsu sometime a type of glue may behave differently depending on the brand, and condition in which you use them.

I agree with @fredk (thank you for the adhesive cleaner tip btw), it's been in the back on my mind for a while, and I think this forum is a great place to create this wiki, this way leather worker can share their actual experience in a centralized place. I will work on some sort of template so that the thread would be easily searchable and will come back to suggest it, then we can of course discuss/complete it together with the ones who are interested in creating this kind of ressource.

Try contacting the company/companies  that makes the adhesive that you intend using.  The stuff I use has all the  relevant info on the tin, uses, drying times, safety info  etc. as well as company  contact details .

@Handstitched you are right - all the information is usually on the containers themselves. And the type of adhesive used is often personal preferences as well. and availability.

@fredk another informative thread where everyone contributes? Why not? With personal preferences and experience more valuable information will be available.

I don't much use adhesives except gorilla glue, so will leave that to those who do use glues more frequently.

@Ornyal for the information search online, either look at the information put out by the manufacturers themselves or scientific articles. The rest is usually the "me knows best"  types or companies trying to promote their own products, all to be taken with a pinch of salt.
