Looking for help making a Shriner Fez hat case

Recommended Posts

As the title says, I am looking for possibly a pattern or help with how to make a leather Fez case.  I am currently a Master Mason and a Shriner.  When I was accepted into the Shriners, I got initiated with a good friend of mine.  When we ordered our Fez they did not come with a case and I didn't want to buy a cheap one you can find online. For rigidity, I was thinking of using a large cylindrical paper mache hat box and then building the leather case around it, but I am having a hard time finding one that would fit the actual Fez.  Most cases I have seen on the internet that are made from leather are either zipper style opening top or have some sort of clasp.  I have never built anyting cylindrical like this so it would def be a challenge without help.  Also, I noticed that most cases have sort of interal center piece that I assume helps hold the fez in place during travels.  I did do a bit of searching and found some examples here, but nothing I could find as far as instructions or guides to assist me.  I have included some photos of leather cases as an example of what I am looking to do.  Thanks in advance!

If you look at the little center  piece of the middle one . . . it shows you how to lace the back to make the cylinder.

Personally I would not opt for the zippered case . . . zippers and leather generally are a pain to get lined up and working.

I would do the bottom style . . . two different sizes of cylinders . . . undoubtedly veggie tan . . . molded over wooden or metal cylinders . . . hand stitched on the edges.

Have fun . . . looks like a challenging project.

May God bless,

Dwight

Does anyone happen to have a pattern?  Or at least a cylinder pattern that can get me started?

You might look up Armitage Leather, aka dangerous beans on here, Nigel Armitage. Has a website and a little on YouTube, but he is a great teacher and has a tub (or cylinder) section.

Thank you.  I have seen a few Fez cases posted here, but the members are either inactive or didn't provide any information.  I would like to make one for myself and a good friend of mine.  Thank you for the information!

Look for the Al Stohlman book on how to make leather cases for the technique.   I made a few in the early 2000's but I guess the pattern went to Missouri with the rest of them.  I made a formed bottom to hold the shape, no center post. FYI, I'm glad the demand dried up.
