JohnD Report post Posted December 8, 2007 I considering doing 2 entrees for the contest, One based on Clay's tutorial and one based on Kate's, but then decided to just come up with my own. Here's what I came up with. Not that it's the best, but I just wanted to offer it up as an alternative in case someone was looking for a pattern. I will be using this for my own entry and thought, if anyone didn't mind doing the same pattern as someone else,(since it's not actually a judged contest) It would be interesting to see another interpretation of it. Good luck to all, John I don't know why, but you may need to resize the pic before printing

robert Report post Posted December 10, 2007 Nice leaf, John - thanks.... I tooled it once this afternoon, and had so much fun I tooled it again in a different style. So far i am up to 4 entries for the contest - this is good practice and is fun.
JohnD Report post Posted December 10, 2007 Thanks Robert, I'm on my 3rd time tooling it. All the same style just making improvements each time. I can't remember who right now, but someone on the forum gave the advice to tool your patterns four times and I decided to try it with this. I don't post that often, but I am here reading every day. The idea with doing the pattern 4 times is that you will be able to see improvements each time. When I started carving I was told to do it this way and it was amazing the improvement that I could see with each revision. I numbered them all and still look back at them from time to time and am horrified at how bad my early carving was. I am still far from professional, but do OK now. I like the pattern posted. I will have to think about carving and entering it. I was so excited that there was going to be a contest, but that faded when I read that the "winners" were being selected by socialism and not by talent or ability. While I know I have no chance of being the best, it is difficult to strive to be when the finish line is not in the same place for everyone. Regis Report post Posted December 11, 2007 Aaron, Sounds like you are trying to volunteer to do the judging! It'll probably be pretty easy only a hundred or so photo's all taken to show the same views with the same lighting not to mention the same complexity of design. Glad someone is trying to step up to this simple & easy task. Just kidding of course. I believe the initial objective was just to find out the level of interest and perhaps how many actual skill levels are represented. Dangling some drawing prizes was to keep the 1st/fact-finding contest attempt from being a contest between 4 or 5 top entries. Hope you participate so we can see your work.
